Re: "Don't stand so close" (I can't believe I said it
I'm at the casino to win money, not to be nice. If someone intrudes on my space, I will tell them to please move on. Especially if the "looker-with-nothing-productive-to-do" is smoking and especially if he/she is blowing their smoke in my direction. To me, stopping behind a player and not only staring at them, but also plastering them with second-hand smoke is about as rude as it gets.
As a non-smoker, rascal, this really irritates me, also. I understand that smoking and gambling go together (along with drinking and flirting with the waitresses ), and I accept that players will smoke. But NOT non-players in my face!!
I usually stop playing, turn around, and stare at them. If they say anything to me, I tell them "This is not a VP class, and I am not your instructor".
BTW, I had one on my last Biloxi trip. I didn't notice her at first, since she was standing kind of in the middle of a bank of machines, puffing on a cigarette. I was playing the end machine. The Mrs was playing on the opposite side of me, and hit a hand-pay. I stood up, walked around to her to congratulate her, and saw the woman come up to my machine, hit cash out, grab the ticket, and take off. I, of course, ran her down, and she immediately surrendered the ticket to me, and scurried off.
The moral is: In addition to being irritating, the 'lurkers' can be expensive.

You can slow these leeches down a bit by dealing a hand and holding the cards you want before leaving the machine. They have to finish playing the hand before they can cash out - giving you a little extra time to stop them.

WTG, billy! Good point, onemoretry.Jean Scott, author of The Frugal Gambler, etc. told two interesting stories about having money stolen. She had turned to put her jacket on the next seat to save the machine for her husband. Apparently someone pressed the cash out button and perhaps another picked up the ticket. It was a corner machine that did not have sound for the cash out button. Casino personnel could tell someone had cashed out her $600 ticket almost immediately but there was no way to recover the money. Before TITO, she turned when someone dropped a bucket of coins near her for distraction. She knew when she turned back to her machine her purse would be missing but HOW??? Someone had pulled up the plexiglass separating her machine from the machine behind her machine and stolen her purse. These serve as good warnings for the rest of us to keep alert and expect the unexpected, especially where money is concerned in casinos!

I hope you reported the incident to security. With surveillance cameras everywhere in a casino, they could have identified her. You got your ticket back but she probably would do the same thing again. Having her in the casino database might save someone from losing their cash.

To give credit where it's due, that idea came from one of Jean Scott's articles about her experiences.

I know that I should have, but I didn't. I was just not in the mood to fill out a bunch of paperwork. She would probably just work another Biloxi casino, if she is not already doing that.
If I see her trying that again on a future visit, I will just 'pop' her in the kneecap. That will give security plenty of time to catch her.
