It's ok, Burtwithau.  I typed a seven word sentence.  Regardless of the amount of verbiage, one cannot defend an indefensible position.  And, yes, your LOL was exceedingly appropriate.  LOL

Hey, BillyJoe and Ginfre break it up.  I will quote Monty Python "Let's not quibble over who killed who".  You don't see me getting into any arguments, oh wait maybe one or two. LOL

Oh, you would know if I was arguing, and that was NOT an argument. I didn't even know if the comment about 'growing up' was directed at me. If it was, I just stated my rationale. I do not look for anyone to follow my lead.

I would agree with billyjoe on this one when it comes to helping a person with their play. I will help if I am asked but I will not spend too much time coaching another player when my own play might suffer because I am not focused. I play video poker because I like the solitude of me and the machine I am playing. I will be social with other players near me but I control the amount of time that I spend doing this. I will rarely offer unsolicited advice and I am nervous when I do because I don't want to get the "death stare" if the play doesn't go right for the other person.

I'm still trying to map out where the undefensable position is in this thread because, right now, I am not seeing it.

Tedlark!  Both you and your agreement partner billyjoe fully miss the point!  The issue wasn't to deny your sanctity of machine and you!  The matter opened as a friendly help, that's all!  Those playing for serious cash usually aren't shoulder to shoulder with a questioner.  Read and comprehend from the intial offering.  I will close by kindly offering that "undefensable" is not a word.  Refer to my spelling.  Have a good one, man.

Thanks for the free spelling lesson ginfre. Was this kindly offering unsolicited by me or did I ask you to correct my spelling mistake? You didn't mention in your original post if these casino patrons solicited or otherwise asked for your advice or if you just stuck your nose into their business? Did I impeach your post in the other forum about the ads? You mentioned that, in the past, you have purchased memberships that eliminated the ads but now you are complaining about the ads?
And your comment on playing for serious cash meant or implied what? I also think you have a misplaced comma after the word verbiage but who am I to judge.

I close by asking " Have a good what?"

I was playing Bonus Poker 1 night, the guy next to me was on a DDB machine. He had been there longer than I. He cashes out, I don't know if he was up or down, so I decided to move to DDB. He starts yelling, "Its gonna Hit, Its gonna Hit, I know it is." He then walks away. A few moments later he returns to watch over my shoulder. I'm dealt a pair of 2's and 2 unsuited face cards. I hold the 2's. Draw squat. He starts lecturing me, "Why did you hold the 2's? Its Jacks or Better. You never throw out JOB. You can't win that way. Bla Bla Bla." I looked over at my girlfriend and she gave me the "Its not worth it, just ignore him" look. So I did, played out my credits and moved.
Oh and did I mention this was at a Racino. All VLT's with predetermined outcomes anyhow.

.... How do others handle this?  Do you let them flounder/flail or do you try helping them?

Generally, I will try to assist if someone needs assistance. (Old teachers never quit teaching.)
However, it depends on the situation. if I'm focused on the machine and my timing is right I try to ignore others. But, if someone is standing around me watching me play and its distracting me, I tend to stop and ask if they play VP. This usually leads to me giving them this site or them walking away.

If someone is next to me and asks for help or I stop to watch a hand and they ask I'll give tell them the recommended hold or a suggested general way to play. Often, if its a technical question about the machine (how to change games, number of hands, etc.) I assist and then go back to play. This often happens with "new players" many who aren't familiar with multi-hand machines.

When a person sits down without a clue how to play and says "How do you play this game?" I direct them to this site and if my timing is off, I'll take the break to assist them for a few minutes. However; my favorites are the clueless, cocky ones who tell their friends they know how to play each hand. When they say, "Yeah, I play poker (table) all the time - this is a cinch." I sit back and enjoy! Usually they are gone pretty quick and it gets quite again.

Yea, I have had this happen to me.  Playing DDB I had someone tell me that I should hold a two pair where one of the pairs was aces.  I put them in the lost soul category and mentioned that I play "by the book" to get as good of a return as possible.  Naturally, they asked what "by the book" meant, so I told them about the wizard of odds site and the strategy guides that are available.  I don't know if the message got through but at least I tried.

I have always felt that teaching is one of the most noblest of professions.  Good for you, sir.
