Harrahs New Orleans

Post by UptightTO »

My wife and I are taking the train to New Orleans in September...any full pay DDB VP available at Harrahs?  It is a nice casino?

If there was I missed it, been a couple of years since I was there so things may have changed. Paytables weren't very good but better than what I found on the cruise ship. I guess you could say it was a decent casino but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there.

To answer your question, many residents of New Orleans, Metairie and the surrounding metro area drive 45 minutes or so to the Mississippi Coast rather than play in any of the local casinos. Paytables are worse in Louisiana, taxes on jackpots are higher, and with the Harrah's casino on Canal Street you have to play a minimum amount for free parking. If you don't have free parking in the Harrah's garage, then be prepared to pay an arm and a leg to park. Further, when going to or from your car after dark, be extremely cautious --- the area surrounding the Harrah's casino is a high crime area. I am in New Orleans a lot, and I always drive to the Mississipi Coast for casinos --- it is the difference between day and night.

Wifey and I drove over to Harrah's New Orleans from Biloxi one day last month. They have increased the number of VP games and machines. The pay tables are not great. We were shut out.

The one good thing for non-residents, if you get a hand pay, they will withhold state income tax. But if you file a Louisiana State return, you get it all back. In Mississippi, they hold 3% on winnings for non-residents, and you CANNOT get that back.

Do be vigilant, as was said, as it is not the greatest environment in the area. The food, of course, is terrific. If nothing else, DURING THE DAY, go over to Cafe Du Monde for some fresh beignets and chicory coffee.

I would rather drive to the Mississippi casinos from New Orleans if I can find better pay tables..99% of our play is in Nevada....We like the Peppermill in Reno, South Point in Las Vegas and The Aquarious in Laughlin...9/6 is the norm in all of these casinos....

I haven't personally been there to verify, but VPFree says that they do have 9/6 DDB. But if you're looking to play less than dollars, finding them may be difficult. They say only a few 9/6 DDB exist for quarters. They also point out they offer 9/6 DDB Multi-Strike for as cheap as nickels (but optimal strategy changes).

I will be there next week.  But I know they have changed the VP around from my last trip in August.  I used to love playing the single progressive end cap machines but they are gone now.  The paytables are not that good unless you are in HL. There is one single machine in HL and it must be an error lol but it is the only one that has TDB, Wild 7's, SDB and Shockwave.  Rest of it is pretty generic.

It is the total package that determines my bottom line. I can park freely and easily on the coast; hotel accomodations are nicer and cheaper; the restaurant prices are much lower; the crime rate is much lower; the paytables are better; and, not to stereotype or offend anyone, the players on the coast are a cut above what you find in Harrah's New Orleans.

In addition, to reply to Billyjoe, yes, you can file and get a refund on the 6% withheld by Louisiana from your jackpot, but by the time you do that and await your check (some 18 months after the jackpot) what is the real cost to you?

Based on many, many years of experience of playing in New Orleans and on the coast, the coast is by far the better deal.

Finally, to slamdunk (pun intended) my reply to Billyjoe, beignets are as bad for your health as the smoke in Harrah's.
