Tunica Trip Report (LONG with a bunch of pictures)
Well, tunica has changed, its been 3 years since i have been there. Ghost town is all that comes to mind. Many of the casinos have downsized both in square footage as well as employees. Food is still decent and the people are much more friendlier than i ever remember.
We arrived late saturday night (originally not expected until sunday afternoon) but we decided to get a jump on our little get away...
We booked a room at Harrahs (i still call it the Grand) on the ipad when we were about 4 hours out - we can comp you that room tonight mr scott - booya good start to the trip. here is the room (nothing fancy) but you can see the casino 1/4 mile away through the window;
so we played for a few hours at Harrahs (the grand) saturday night, a few good hits to start the trip;
dealt to me!
woke up sunday morning refreshed, hit the paula dean brunch buffet (comp) and then headed to the goldstrike for an early check in. sorry no pics of the strike, i have stayed there so many times in the past its like another room in my house... the casino changed big time, its all penny slots, the vp was dead (terrible 7/5 and 6/5 pay tables).
we decide would rather stay at horseshoe for the rest of the week, so we go talk to a host and they comp the remainder of our visit to a deluxe king - this is another jackpot in my book. heres the room (its dark but there is a sectional couch with a chair and another tv;
we get the hell out of the strike - just a bad bad feeling there...
so we play a bit at shoe and roadhouse - not much luck on day 2. before dinner, the bankroll for the day is almost gone and i sit down at the desolate $1 8/5 and after a few turns, i get 5 crap cards, dump them all and get this beauty dealt to me on redraw;
off to the best buffet in tunica (horseshoe) and then to meet up with some friends for drinks.
day 3 found us hitting up the south end of tunica - Hollywood, Resorts and Sams Town. nothing to write home about (all had bad pay tables, none were busy) but i did hit my first royal of the trip at Hollywood on a 8/5 TDB .25;
resorts had a progressive at $1600 at the bar so we had some drinks and while no royal, i did run into these;
and again, dealt to me
one more stop on this adventure - fitzgeralds. this place i dont think has changed since they opened their doors 20 some years ago. they still have machines that pay in coins... the wife played some classic jackpot party and other nickel favorites, as usual the vp here sucked as did the buffet (worst casino buffet i have ever had - luckily when we joined the players club we each got a free buffet so no harm i guess..)
back to the shoe to rest and the wife took advantage of the jacuzzi tub and i went to the poker room to see some old friends and play a little 4/8.
tuesday brought us back to harrahs (the grand) as this just had the best feeling of all the casinos; honestly i had too many quads to count, i didnt take pictures of them all if other people were around (dork!), but here are a few of them;
Wednesday our final day, brought us back to Harrahs again (the grand), and again it didnt disappoint. quads left and right, and 2 nice hits shown below to wrap things up, royal and aces with kicker;
all in all a great trip, we only paid for one night of hotel at the strike, and one meal at hollywood, harrahs comped everything else from rooms, to buffets to my gift shop snacks. winnings paid for the gas to and from and a little something for the kids when we got back.
thanks for reading - phew, this took about an hour with all the pics etc.
Scott
Fun Fact - I was dealt or drew 4 to the royal, a total of 47 times from saturday night until wednesday night...

Excellent report Scotty. Harrah's sent me a free trip down to Tunica over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend but I won't be able to make it. It would have worked out great because my neice graduates 8th grade in Memphis that week and there is a party so I would have been able to go for free and that would have been cool.
Again, great report.

Yeah, writing/formatting these things up is a bit of work. Sorry you missed out on the 40/10/6 DDB game. Hopefully the locals ***** enough to bring it back, but definitely not counting on it. And generally speaking you're right about Tunica, it's losing steam. Especially during the week. But I still like it for a getaway, and comped drinks of course...lol
And did you have a jacuzzi in your room at the Shoe? Or was this by the pool area? We have never stayed at the Shoe, but we have considered it.
And nice hits!

Been years since we have been to Tunica. The state tax got under our skin. But... with these results it might be time to rethink that posotion.

it was a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, very large (easily 2 people). also a tv on the counter in the bathroom (AWESOME!). that should have been worth a picture, didnt even think of it.
i stayed at the shoe once before years ago, loved it which is why we chose to stay again (that and the fact it was free).
our room overlooked the front lot, dont ask me why but i like to see the lights from the other casinos (strike, roadhouse etc).
yes, the free drinks! harrahs even has it now where you order your drink from the touch screen and she brings it right to you. they dont walk around asking constantly. (non harrahs properties they still do of course) but at grand shoe and roadhouse, u just hit a few buttons and your drink is on its way. it even tells you when the order was accepted and is on its way.
both Harrahs (the Grand) and the Shoe have really nice rooms - would definitely recommend!

dbldbl scotty,
Did Gold Strike remove all of their VP machines in the up stairs portion of the casino?

no, they still have the progressives right at the top of the escalators as well as game kings wrapped around both sides of the railings ranging from .05 - $1 - as well as machines IN the poker room. they also have about 9 machines scattered around the casino main floor mixed in with slots.
