Thousand to One Pay Out
What ever happened to the thousand to one pay out for a Royal Flush? Back in the 90's my wife and I stopped at a Casino a couple of times. Didn't know what we were doing. Played video poker one coin at a time. I happened to be in a book store one day and saw a book entitled "Win at Video Poker". I learned what to hold and that you had to play 5 coins at a time to get the maximum pay out for a Royal Flush. However, the book indicated that the pay out for a Royal Flush was a thousand to one (5 coins wins 5000 coins) rather than 4000 coins that is the norm today. This lower pay out changes the math presented in the book. The book says to hold a 10 with any suited J,Q,K,or Ace and to throw away a high pair in favor of any three cards of a Royal Flush. This strategy is apparently not proper for a 4000 coin pay out.

Sam, the most common 5 coin natural royal flush video poker payout is 4,000 coins. Occasionally you will run into a game that pays less. Some machines allow you to bet more than 5 coins with all the payouts adjusted accordingly on the chart. A bank of machines can be linked together with a large accumulated jackpot for a royal flush. This is called a progressive. The progressive jackpot continues to grow until someone in the group of machines hits it. It then reverts back to the normal max coin payout and starts growing again. This may have been what the book was talking about. As the progressive jackpot grows, the strategy changes as well. It is possible to find weird non standard pay schedules, but I can't remember ever seeing one for a 5,000 coin royal flush. Possibility another forum member may have.Your card hold question is not answerable because you didn't provide enough information. Card strategy is dependent on the game, the pay schedule and the progressive jackpot amount if there is one.

A lot of bars offer royals that pay $1199, in order to avoid giving tax forms, but offer short payouts on other handouts

The only $5000 royals I've seen are at NY Racinos. But math and strategy is useless on them 'cause they are VLT or VGM machines.

Before computers became commonplace, there was a lot of bad information and misleading literature out there. The early days of the internet were even worse.

At what used to be the Royal Palms in Laughlin advertised the 5000 Royal payout on their marquee. This was quite a few years ago.

If you're referring to 9/6 Jacks with a 5000 credit royal, those suggestions still aren't quite right. A high pair is still better than AKT, AQT, and AJT.
As for games today, full pay Joker poker offers a 5000 credit royal. The flopped "My Poker" machines from WMS also had an option to offer 5000 credit Royals at dollars (4796 quarters).
Historically though, it's been 4000 quarters from the get go, even back in the days where they fleeced the public by not pushing Jacks or Better. Picture is poor but it looks to say 4000. Not pushing Jacks or Better returns 81.36% and leads to a complex strategy.

When a new local casino entered our area for the first 6 months their Royal Progressive started at $5,000 and you could play 1 of about 9 different games all linked to the progressive. It was a bank of 6 machines. After 6-8 months it went to resetting at $4,000. They never advertised it as any kind of promo so I am guessing it was just a programming mistake. But I had always been told only a chip change can alter a paytable. Right after it went to $4,000 a few months later they were taken out all together. They were great to play 9/6 DDB and 9/7 TDB full pay deuces and 9/5 Super Aces. In that 8-10 month period I had a many of handpays. The machines were brand new and played on the good side of the curve hence their demise I would suspect.

I dug out my book. I haven't read it in more than 20 years. The game is jacks or better. The Author indicates that his strategy is based on a very popular 6/5 payout scale with a 1,000 pay out for the royal. I guess he determined that it is best to hold 3 of the royal flush because of the low payout for the full house and the flush.
