Two Crappy Royals

Post by FloridaPhil »

My wife is beating me up big time this year. While I keep stuffing hundreds into the machines, she keeps plugging away at her lousy quarter games. Here are two royals she hit recently.  I posted them for you guys and gals out there who are in the same boat.   Like Mr. Dancer says, "Is it better to be run over by a truck or a bus?"  At the moment my wife is driving the bus!

Thanks.  Slow, steady, accurate play with crappy odds is better any day than fast, inaccurate, undisciplined play of any VP game.

Phil congrats to you and your wife. You weren't kidding when you mentioned the lack of decent VP paytables in your area.

Thanks.  Slow, steady, accurate play with crappy odds is better any day than fast, inaccurate, undisciplined play of any VP game.

99% and above quarter VP pay tables are rare in the Southeast.   The majority of the time you must play $1s or above to find 99% games.  These bigger games are still negative, so while you may earn better odds and comps your overall loses are still significant.   At this time there are still a few places where 99 percent and above quarter games are available and we try to frequent them as much as possible.  We are lucky in that the Hollywood Hard Rock has 6 machines with quarter 98.9% quarter deuces wild.  This is a first class resort with free rooms and generous comps.  The free play is substantial and they have enough drawings and incentives to keep us happy.  Tampa is not as generous, but it's OK for a couple of hours. In our travels around the country we play a lot of VP games.   Nickel and quarter games usually start around 95%.   The worst odds are in Mississippi.  Playing bigger in Mississippi is an even bigger loser as the State taxes you 3% on all hand pays.  We understand the gambling taxes in the NE are pretty bad as well.  The best quarter VP odds we have ever played were at Red Rock in Vegas with South Point coming in a close second.  I am sure there are other Vegas casinos that are just as good. Our recent trip the West Wendover Nevada was a good example.  3-4 years ago NSU quarter deuces was common.  On our last trip the quarter deuces games were 95-97% (ouch!).If you are going to play recreational level VP outside of Vegas or Reno, it means playing negative games.  You may find decent games once in a while, but they usually cut the comps to nothing.   One exception is the Monarch casino is Blackhawk.  If we lived in Colorado, we wouldn't play anywhere else. There is no use in crying about what's happening.  I only wish some members of this forum were a little more understanding.  It's real easy to tell someone not to play negative games when you're sitting at South Point playing full pay VP with a free drink in your hand earning cash back.  That is not the norm by any means.

Yes, I talked to a nice couple from Utah who don't even stop in Wendover even though it is a much shorter drive there than to Reno. They just drive on through to Reno and play the better percentage vp tables.

We found Wendover by accident years ago when we were on a trip to Bonneville.  Back then Wendover wasn't all that bad.  We had some good times there, so we decided to stop by on our last Western Road Trip.  We were shocked to find truly poor VP in Nevada.  I'm sure Wendover is for Salt Lake City players sneaking over the border for a little "action".  No harm done as my wife hit a royal and I hit a couple of quad deuces.  We had planned to stay for two days.  We stayed one night and hightailed it back to Blackhawk.  We won't be back to Wendover any time soon.

I'm unfamiliar with the pay tables. But hell, I'm just trying to get my first RF in fifteen months. Cry me a river!
But hell, I'm just trying to get my first RF in fifteen months.
Here's what you do.  Drop by the casino on your way home today.  Shove a $20 bill into the first VP machine you find.     Play single coin quarters and hit the deal button.  I double guarantee you will hit a royal.  Take the $62.50 and buy 3 double gin martinis or get them for free.  Drink all three of them as fast as you can.  Your troubles will be gone!

20/12/10/4/4/3 and 20/12/9/4/4/3 are 97.58% and 97.06% respectively. It's still slightly better than the most common quarter payout for Deuces nationwide 25/16/13/4/3/2 = 96.77%. In JoB terms, they are averaging around an 8/5 game.

Ideally they play better games, but like Phil says it's difficult for quarters unless you go far away to a different market. And at that point, you're spending money on "having a vacation". Hell, St. Louis doesn't even offer quarter "Airport Deuces" anymore. But we do have a better game in "full pay" 9/4/4/3 Bonus Deuces (99.45%).
