Re: Video Poker For Winners Simulator/Trainer
Talk to me Bigboy...what does Winpoker have that VPW doesn't have? I saw that the strategy generator costs another $30 on top of the price of the WP. Since you have them both (or I think you do) what is it that makes it better in your opinion? The Feel? Accuracy? Speed? Features? I've never seen it in action and am curious. I have heard several people really give it props.

29.95 for the download, superior in all facets except for card graphics and sounds. Give it a free whirl.-Good night.

"Rob, are you implying that you bought it also in order to objectively analyze and review it? If you haven't, then how can you make a statement like that?"
No. My publisher supplied me with a copy so I could analyze and review (in writing) it. After WinPoker it's a big letdown. It's frustrating to navigate, and playing the same type hands over and over is irritating. I chatted with Dancer several times about it and when he couldn't answer the questions I asked Dean Zamzow if he had any ideas being that he developed the WinPoker series--which he didn't not having worked with it before. The final decision I made was not to review it in order to avoid controversy, and allow it instead to be judged by the court of public opinion. I also believe the high price is a big negative. He was on the ball with WinPoker but in my opinion this thing doesn't cut it.

I may do that Bigboy. Thanks. I'm quite sure that the cost won't severely impact my retirement plans.
What I'd heard most emphatically mentioned about Winpoker was that the statistics were more easily examined and understood. I believe they did mention that the simulation speed for a number of hands (say 2000 or something on that order) was rather slow on VPW. I only ran that function once and agree that it seems slow.

While I do not find it difficult to navigate myself, I am still questioning the repitition of hands but only in the sense that if it really is occurring, it would not be emulating the results of a truly random casino game. For training purposes, that "feature" would a good one. But for setting expectations of players for what they might experience in a casino, it would be less than desirable unless that feature was clearly noted. And, there is still question as to whether they really are repeating or whether what I've seen is the result of settings I may have employed or just plain coincidence.
I will accept the statement of the analyst who coded the program regardless of what her verdict is. What possible ulterior motive could she have for denying that non-randomness of hands if it exists? If it's there, then it would be a training tool and this software is first and foremost a training effort with entertainment being somewhat secondary.
The price is rather steep though discounts are available through some outlets. My hope is that the version we originally purchased is the first of an evolving product and that probelms and concerns buyers have with it will be evaluated by developers and possibly employed in furture releases.
Man, this is so difficult to recreate. I went back with a fresh session and couldn't get it to repeat the duplication of hands. Maybe it was just coincidence. Possibly I was in "advanced mode" when I first noticed it.
It seems like the duplicity occurs more frequently if you have the "warn" feature enabled, as opposed to selecting "none"-where hand distribution seems much better. Obviously though, selecting none won't show you the error that you have made. Sorry, right now i vote.
Downloaded VPFW again, this time Version 1.0.5.0 This version seems better than Version 1.0.4.0 with regard to hand duplicity. As far as the 10X multiplier hanging the game up, i have'nt gotten the 10X on this version yet.
Hey Mike A.: Did you try that shareware yet?

Not yet Bigboy, but rest assured, I will.
I have another simulator called BVS that I picked up somewhere along the way. I think It was around $20 but it doesn't have the "game" selection that Winpoker and VPW have (I think they are all single line games.) It does seem to generate different strategy when you change the pay tables. One thing I do not like about it is that I haven't found a way to just pull up a strategy chart. You can analyze a particular hand, but cannot see the overall strategy. As a beginner, you would have to learn by making mistakes and letting it correct you.
But, it does not have advanced training features. It's fast though and doesn't take up a lot of CPU resources. Graphics and Sounds are nothing close to VPW. However, it did let me custom design a card back that is a picture of my grandson....that HAS to be worth SOMETHING!

To my knowledge the only strategy generators are VPW, FVP and VPSM (expect another one this year). I've used VPSM for years and it has been a decent product. I'll also put in a plug for vipoker. It's does not generate strategies but it supports many games and the price is right (free).
I've recently started using mobile winpoker. If you travel a lot and you have or are interested in a windows mobile cell phone or PDA, this is a great product. I can practice games anywhere (although I wouldn't recommend it while driving ). I also have been beta testing Dean's BJ trainer that runs on the same platform. Very, very cool .

I think the most important functions for selecting a Simulator are:
1. That it warns you of mistakes in strategy decisions
2. That it includes the games that you most often play
3. That you can adjust paytables AND have the strategy automatically adjusted for those changes.
Pretty much everything else is "Glitz & Glamor." It is nice to be able to review a session and see what your accuracy was. It is also interesting to note how fast you are playing. Having graphics and sound that emulate those of actual casino machines is okay too.
But the big secondary key factor (the one AFTER the first three mentioned first) to me would be the ability to pull up a chart showing the strategy for the game you are playing adjusted by the pay table modifications. Sometimes, it is just easier to remember the close-call hands if you can see where they fall in the overall scheme of things.
