Gas Prices

Post by olds442jetaway »

If anyone is worried about high gas prices……at risk of jinxing it my 2019 Elantra will consistently get over 50 mpg with a gas engine on the highway if you keep it at 60-65 mph. Since that is hard to do on today’s roads, I usually drive between 68-75 mph and it still gets 44-46 mpg. It now has 155k on the clock and has never revisited the dealer who will gouge you even for routine maintenance. I keep up locally on oil changes and things like bulbs and the one set of spark plugs I do myself. One new battery and of course tires, wiper blades, and filters. Knock on wood, that’s it. I will be getting another one at some point.

MPG from home as I’m pulling into the garage at Bizarro!! Avg speed about 67! Pretty heavy traffic, but only had to brake a few times.

Nice report on your fuel mileage, olds. So, are you reporting here that you routinely exceed the posted speed limit then? I understand exceeding the posted speed limit when heading to Bizarro as your excitement is elevated but, do you exceed the posted speed limits when leaving Bizarro after a losing session?

Keep it about the same. Believe it or not, it was on the news that the state police is allowing 10 miles over the post limit sometimes even 15 but on the safe side, you’re good keeping it under 75 mph. Even at that cars go whizzing by me.
Still miss the 65 442, 68 Charger 440 RT, and even the 79 Z28 which handled great, but was not a fast car. I remember when we first started posting, you had a Cutlas. I have to guess at the year. I believe a 77.

My car history includes; 1977 Cutlass Supreme Brougham, 1985 Camaro Berlinetta (V-8 powered), 1988 IROC-Z, 1989 Corvette, 1993 Beretta, 1983 Ford Escape (daily driver when I had the Corvette), 1969 Cadillac Sedan deVille, 1980 Ramcharger, 1993 Ford Explorer Limited, 1995 Monte Carlo Z34, 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, 2009 Chevy Trailblazer, 2014 Honda CR-V, 2018 Honda CR-V, 2025 Honda Pilot Black Edition (current ride). These are not necessarily in the order I owned them and there may be one or two I forgot.

Oh, and a couple motorcycles too; a 1978 Yamaha 750 and a 1984 Honda V-65 Magna. The V-65 ran 0 to 60 in 2.1 seconds and a 10 second quarter mile with me on it at Union Grove, WI. dragstrip.

Octane? I get better mileage with Sunoco Ultra 94, but it's not worth the difference- I paid $4.99 gal vs. $3.99 for 87 last time but I know I didn't get 20% more in efficiency. Ten % increase at best. I put the Ultra in, i'm not sure why, guess I thought it was beneficial in engine life as well. Considering the recent increase, I will likely go back to being cheap. My main ride is 2012 Mazda3.

Good little cars. The 3. I would need a thread the size of a book and bore most forum members to death to talk about all of my rides and the history behind them.
