OK, a man goes to the river needing 4 quarts of water. He has a 3 quart and a 5 quart pail. How does he get 4 quarts.

He fills up his 5 quart pail and uses the 3 quart one to take a pee. He carries both pails home and presents them to his wife. Upon seeing the pail of pee, his wife cries out "We needed 4 quarts of water, not a bucket of piss!" She dumps the piss in the back lawn which attracts a 1-quart-drinking fox. The fox drinks from the 5 quart bucket, leaving 4 quarts.

I would fill the 5 quart pail full pour into the three quart pail until it is full. Mark the water level in the 5quart pail empty the 3 quart pail. fill 3 quart pail with remaining contents of the 5 quart pail. Refill 5 quart pail to the line I marked and go home with 4 quarts of water evenly dsitributed betwixt each pail.

Ok, here's the solution.
Fill the 5 quart pail ... pour from it to the 3 quart pail leaving 2 quarts ... empty the 3 quart pail and pour the 2 quarts into it from the 5 quart pail ... fill the 5 quart pail and pour from it into the 3 quart pail until it is full ... you now have 4 quarts.
