Ok WM & SM! I seen these references to fish in your posts. Are they a PJ(Private Joke) or are they indicating that VP enthusists are just like Guppies, they will bite on anything?
 
I think they're comparing gamblers to those other traditional tellers of tall tales, fishermen - both in the size of the catch, and the one that got away.  IMHO, fishermen don't hold a candle to gamblers in that regard based on some of the stories I hear for real up in the casinos.  Really amazing - makes me wonder how those places manage to stay in business.  Would never happen here, of course.

More like the fishermen, hoping to turn small bait into a big catch. Sometimes you get lucky and bring one home for dinner, sometimes you stop at the fish market and throw it in the cooler with your hook in its mouth.

Shows how much I know about fishing - and I go and automatically assume that they were making a reference to the veracity of gamblers..."I'm so embarrassed".
 
The last time I went fishing was about 20 years ago, on a mountain lake not too far from here.  Didn't have any problem baiting the hook, but was horrified when my buddy told me that I'd have to clean whatever I caught.  Hell!  I thought we were just going to drink beer!  Every time I saw one of the little critters get close to the hook I just reeled my line in (not kidding!).

Conclusive proof of my fishing skills, I guess......I did manage not to fall into the lake, though.
