Lost Soul Etiquette

Post by Burtwithau »

Recently, I went to a local casino and was playing DDB next to a lady who was also playing DDB.  I couldn't help but notice that she was not holding her cards correctly, especially on throw-away hands.  For example if she was dealt all low cards and a 10, she would hold the ten.  Not a pair of tens, just a single ten.  In these cases, I usually strike up a conversation then ask how the person learned to play.  She said she had been playing for years and learned on her own.  I told her how I learned and directed her to the wizard of odds site for their strategy guide and trainers.  She stopped for a moment and told me that she very much appreciated this info as no one had ever told her that this was available.  I have done this many many times and the gratitude from others  more than makes up for the few times that my suggestions were rebuffed/ignored.  How do others handle this?  Do you let them flounder/flail or do you try helping them?

If you are human you offer a suggestion. If it is rebuffed then said person is on their own.

Sure, I've helped others, why not?  Firstly, that will never change things regarding the Casinos winnings.  Far too many people walk into Casinos who need help.  Secondly, I've gotten help in the past, and it was much appreciated.  I'm merely passing on the help.   The last time I helped was at Riverside in Laughlin, an elderly couple playing this big $1 progressive.  I noticed he'd hold a pair, perhaps, and retain a third card of no consequence.  I intervened, and the woman says, "oh, he likes sevens", with a slight laugh and giggle.  They were probably worth millions, lol. A prior time at South Point playing QQ's this woman next to me did not form a QQ opp on the deal.  All along she was winning big!  I pointed this out and she was grateful.  "Oh, is that how you do it!", she exclaimed.  Later, I hit a RF, a nice turnaround, I was not getting any QQ's.  I departed.  Later, I came back and saw her cash out amount, and she retained about what she was winning.  GOOD FOR HER.  What goes around, comes around, right?

I admit to being ornery sometimes when people sit down next to me and ask "How do you play this game?", to which I respond "Never play a game for your own money that you do not understand".

Yes, have done this a few times one time i remeber at AC back in the 90,s was playing wheel of fortune .25 very elderly lady had the free spin bonus for up top,she was going to push button to start game all game over again i yelled hold it you have a free spin on bonus up top, she like what do you mean push free button she like Oh! Okay! She hit 1000 credits for 250 dollars, she was so happy little scream came out of her, said she had come there with only 20 dollars and this was like the world to her,(she was very very old) could tell she was not a gambler. That win for her made me feel real good. I am guess but i think she has pass sent this was so long ago. Another time at Mohegan sun in Conn. about 5 years ago lady playing video poker was dealt a straight ace ,k,q,j,t all but the ace was in spades, she was going to save all cards of the straight and about to hit deal button i yelled at her wait, wife was like what, told her talking to lady next to me she like okay.LOL, Lady put up little argument for minute or two then said okay i get rid of ace of heart told her thats what i would do, she hit the deal button my wife was watching too and low and behole came the ace of spades for 1000dollars,the bad part of this story is she didnt even thank me or tip me(didnt need her to but a thank me would been nice) she had them pay her all in twenties could tell she was a gambler. My wife gets mad at me i tip almost everbody. Now when i play video poker at casino i play anywhere from 700 to 900 hundred plus hands a hour, so cant take time to help, so i try ti sit alone, but if i did see somebody makeing a mistake i would let them know, I guarenttee i make some when i playing video poker. I witnessed the same thing @ Mt.Airy once. Women @ end machine was dealt straight w/1 unsuited card.. Guy between us stopped her from hitting draw. I looked over and agreed with him. She reluctantly went for the royal. Bam!!!! $25,000 Royal ($5 credits). All she said to the guy before she took the cash and left was, "I really wanted those 30 credits." Unbelievable.

If that was directed at me, ginfre, I will respond this way. I usually am playing at a $1 denom, wagering anywhere from $15 to $30 a deal, depending on the game. For me to effectively manage my bankroll, I need to focus on my play. I do not live in a casino state, so when I am in a casino, it is during a gaming trip, with a limited time to play. I do not need to spend that time giving lengthy instructions.

If someone asks me a specific question about a specific hand, I will gladly offer my opinion of how I would play it. Beyond that, I would much rather have folks come to a site like this to learn the games BEFORE they start feeding the casino their own money.

I believe that Money Management is the most important aspect of gaming in a casino for a recreational player to learn. I would hate to foster a culture of folks who think they can just drop by, sit down, get some help, and win. WebMan has cards that you can print out to give to folks that refer them to this playing site, where they can play for free and learn properly.

I grew up a long time ago...

Hey, Billyjoe and Ginfre break it up.  I will quote Monty Python "Let's not quibble over who killed who".  You don't see me getting into any arguments, oh wait maybe one or two. LOL
