2013 World Series: STL vs BOS

Post by chattycattty »

Shaping up to be hopefully a very competitive world series.  Both teams deserve to be there.  The umpires just made their 1st horrible call in the bottom of the first inning of game one.  Controversy, umpires just changed call.  I am looking forward to the changes in instant replay next year.  Its unfortunate when an ump or referee can make a bad call that will change the outcome of a sporting event.  It happens too often. Makes you wonder.

I really do not have a horse in this race as I grew up in Houston and have been an Astro fan since the late 60's.  Boy are they a bad team nowadays.  They have lost over 100 games each of the last 3 years.

Any predictions on who will win this years world series?

Don't know why but I feel moved to make a few observations on the game-ending obstruction call last nite. One, it was the right call. Two, if the throw to third hadn't been booted the call would never have had to be made. Three, the rules of Baseball don't change because the bases are loaded in the bottom of the ninth in a World Series game where the score is tied.

The one game I saw at Fenway was when the Bostons were in a playoff race with Toronto. I managed to get a standing room ticket, which means for most of the game I stood next to a suicidal Toronto fan who kept saying things like "C'mon Red Sucks" and missed seeing a controversial shoetop catch in the left field corner. In the top of the eighth or so I thought I'd head on out as Toronto was ahead and I needed to catch the T to get back to my hotel. Plenty of Boston fans also headed out. As I got to the ground floor I heard a lot of shouting coming from the entrance to the seats behind the plate and went over to check it out.

The fans in the upper levels were practically screaming at those headed out the door. "You don't deserve those seats" was the mildest comment made. A security guy apparently felt the same way and led me to a recently-vacated seat behind the plate, from which I was able to watch the Red Sox get within one run in the bottom of the eighth, hold off an incipient Toronto rally in the top of the ninth, then load the bases in the bottom of the ninth and tie the game and win on consecutive singles.

It's for moments like that that we put up with Baseball's seventeen minutes of action packed into three hours. No fair complaining (or gloating) because an inconvenient rule costs (or wins) your team an important game.

Red Sox must win game 4 or for all practical purposes the series will be over.

Still going with Red Sox in 6.  Its been a weird series so far.  Anything is possible.  I do like the fact that game 6 and game 7 if necessary will be in Boston.

Although the obstruction call, technically was probably the right call, I sure hated to see a world series game end that way.  Just when you think you have seen it all, something like that happens.  I wish they would have called the runner out like he would have been without the obstruction call and let the game continue instead of allowing the umpire to determine the outcome of the game.

The umpire didn't determine the game the red sox third baseman did. It was obstruction not that the third basman could have done anything to avoid the call. It was the right call.

Well it's all knotted up after four games after that game-ending pickoff at first. Is it me or do both teams seem to be falling a little short on fundamentals here?
