It's not unusual to play 5-10% above or below the return of a game over the short term. I've had some real ups and downs myself over the last couple of years. The more volatile the machine the bigger the swings and DDB is a very volatile game.

Unless I am reading the payscales incorrectly, it seems that the aces with kickers hands were on 8/5 double double bonus, a 96.8% game, increasing to perhaps 97% with the progressive, and the royal was on NSU deuces, a 99.73% game.
I know a lot of people don't like deuces wild (I don't like getting 20 for a natural quad, or 50 for a natural straight flush either), but giving up close to 3% to play double double seems like a lot.
If there was a casino handy to me offering multiline NSU deuces for 50c, with any reasonable player's club at all, you wouldn't be able to keep me away from the place.
Thats why I play that one and only full pay machine and NSUD especially. I have hit RF 6 separate times on DW so far this year including the New Years Day dealt RF on 5 hands NSUD. I can't find 25/50 NSUD anywhere else in La and especially on 3/5 play.
However; Sweet C loves DDB and has over 20+ AWAK plus 4 RF for the year on her progressive so I can't argue with her much. She did try 3/5 play this weekend but on an 8/5 DDB machine since I was on the full-pay one.
The player's club returns suck however; only .5 even on X days.

mamma,
It must be random because there are many times I don't even see a deuce but I've learned to leave it quickly if I'm not hitting the normal amount of quads and full-houses to stay in the game. Sometimes I'll try the one machine several times a trip and get up and play multi-hand 5¢ until my timing changes...and I do often vary my timing when I'm not hitting on it. I'll also change games and denominations to alter my timing when I'm cold.

RF,
I agree. I've seen those Sweet C AWAKs go right back in...trying to hit again. I personally don't have the patience for DDB even on the 9/6 - 3/5 machine that I play. A few hands of DDB even with a quad and I'm usually back to NSUD or FP JOB/Bonus. Variance and high pay table returns are really important to me when I play even though I've hit well on low pay cruise ship machines. I like to put as much odds in my favor as possible.

The casino wants you to remember the sweet royals and the exciting aces, and to shove the miserable losses into the back of your mind. However, Larry, as logical as you seem to be, the important memory is how much you took into the casino vs how much you actually walked out the door with, factored into every visit over the course of your fiscal year. Even if you can accept annual losses as the price of entertainment, it is important to know precisely where you stand on a financial basis throughout your fiscal year. Rejoicing in royals and aces and trying to forget those losses is simply playing it the casino's way.
(But not intending to rain on your parade!!)

rascal,
I agree with your thoughts and they generally extend to lots of things in life except perhaps love. Being retired on fixed income makes the fiscal self control even more important.
When we worked we set up "401G" accounts with part of our salary just like our "401 Vacation" etc. Wins/losses came out of the 401G account and being educators it was relative to our limited salaries. The same still holds true. Wins go into the 401G and losses come out as well. We also believe a break even trip is a win because we have money for the next trip.
Big wins give us more trips but not necessarily more $ to play or a move to large denomination play. Although, before we retired we twice played $5VP (99% return) after big wins and we did really well both times. Hard to part with our hard earned money which is another reason we gave up slot play for VP. Also its gives us a better chance to keep our $....or at least make more casino trips to visit our $....
I must admit though, sometimes I fantasize how it must feel to be able to play $10-15K a night without a worry like some people I've seen. Then I think of how many trips that would fund.... I guess its all relative...
PS: We could use the rain here in Texas - even during a parade. Many people have lost their homes and possessions due to the drought and wildfires.

Do you mean play $10-15K a night (i.e. coin-in), or bring that much to the casino to gamble with?
