Re: Why the big differences on paytables?
On another note, the two giant casinos take their rivalry on the baseball field as well from watching nationally televised games. I see Mohegan Sun placards on the backstop of Yankee Stadium and along the outfield walls and the mezzanines. I see a huge Foxwoods logo on the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston.
The 2 casinos are in the middle of the Boston and NY area , so there's an equal amount of Boston and NY sports fans at both casinos .
I was at MS a few years back when the Red sox and the Yankees were in the middle of another heated playoff series, and it got quite rowdy. Lots of trash taking going on between the Boston and NY fans so they stopped serving booze around 11 pm in the hopes it didn't get out of hand. It can get a bit intense when those 2 fan bases are in the same building ,lol.

Very interesting to hear about the placement of those casinos. I just saw online that one of the bars at Yankee Stadium is Mohagan Sun Sports Bar. The Red Sox held a winter event at the FoxWoods. And now with the new MGM Resort and Wynn coming up on the horizon in the state of Massachusetts, I wonder if the Red Sox fans will further avoid Mohegan Sun. Both MGM/Wynn are high roller casinos on the Las Vegas strip so I think Foxwoods/M.S. will still be in good shape.
California casinos shut off alcohol service at 1:15 am (restarts it at 6am). With the average 9 inning game between Yankees and Red Sox taking 4 hours, it makes sense for them to stop serving alcohol when the game is over and the real trash talking starts.
The rivalry always gains so much attention, Almost every time they are scheduled to play each other, its either on FOX game of the week or ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. I only saw the Foxwoods logo this past season. The last they faced each other in the postseason was in 2003 (heartbreaking loss to the Red Sox) and 2004 (heartbreaking loss to the Yankees); since then they reached the ALCS but not at the same time, though the 2nd Wild Card spot opening a few years ago makes it possible for them to meet in a different circumstance.

It was 2004,when the Red Sox came back from 3-0 playoff deficit to the Yankees, and went on to win the world series against STL.
As far as MGM/Wynn, I have commented before that I believe both casinos will have a negative effect on the CT casinos. MGM is being built in Springfield, in the western part of MA ,(which of the 2 is closest to CT), and Wynn is being built in the Boston area. I can't speak for what will happen in the western part of MA, but I believe Wynn will take a good chunk of the Boston area business from the CT casinos. It's a 2hr+ drive from Boston to CT, so that alone will be a big factor, in my opinion.
For years FW and MS were the only casinos in New England, once MGM/Wynn are up and running there will be a total of 9 casinos in New England.(3 in MA,2 in RI,2 in ME, and 2 in CT) and talk of more in the future. I believe there is also more casinos being built in NY? If so the CT casinos have there work cut out for them.

Currently, their is nothing particular compelling or special enough about the two Native/***** casinos in Connecticut to make them worth the drive.......ERGO, if the two properties care anything at all to retaining their customers in this area of New England, they had better start schmoozing and courting everyone with generous room and food offers along with free play and all that......do not WAIT until after the fact (when MGM comes online....) Start doing it NOW and keep doing it, and keep your eyes on everyone, and as soon as you see someone defecting, Give them reasons to defect back! Otherwise the defections will turn into "Defecations" all over the bottom line of the two Native Indian Connecticut properties!

I agree DB that CT and the other New England casinos should start offering more in free play , hotel / food discounts, and better pay tables now, rather than waiting till the MGM and Wynn are up and running.
But from what I've been reading that might not be the direction that Foxwoods is going.
They keep sending me emails about there soon to be open $120 million dollar upscale Tanger outlets.
I also read in another forum that The majority of Foxwoods' Rainmaker Casino is now permanently closed.
And there is also talk of them building the worlds largest zip line, hoping to become more family friendly.
I personally could care less about upscale outlet shops, zip lines , and whether or not a casino is family friendly .I'd prefer gambler friendly.

I can't understand why casino executives don't grasp this. Most people I know think this way also.

I started disliking Vegas when Bellagio started that trend of high end shopping outlets.
Took a few years to realize I will never be able to win at those establishments since it is being funded by player's pockets without much for return.

Casinos in general never cease to amaze me in the ways they find to spend money that unfortunately we have lost. There is a wall with glass flowers on it out of the way in the High Limit section of Mohegan Sun that nobody sees or cares about. An employee told me a few years ago that it cost somewhere between 100k and 200k just for the glass flowers. It would be nice if they kept a huge rainey day fund for bad times so they wouldn't have to cut employee pay, befefits, or bonuses. I don't ever see that happening though. Falling employee morale not only affects those lives and families, but some of it has to rub off on the patrons giving them maybe less incentive to go more often or stay longer. Just my opinion anyway, but I have been around long enough to get a feel for things like this.
One more minor but representative example. Starting a couple of weeks ago, Mohegan Sun cut the usual Senior Monday nominal gifts to all senior patrons with a player's card to one thousand from several thousand. They used to run out about 1 pm and people got used to this. That day they ran out before 11 am. I missed mine too not that I needed it. I stood and watched as disgusted seniors piled into the elevators and went home without dropping a dime at the casino. These gifts usually had a value of only 5 bucks or so and who knows what the casino paid for them if anything. Most of the seniors I shared coffee with or chatted with while in the lines waiting for the gift, dropped anywhere from fifty bucks to several hundred on those trips and I'm sure some a lot more. People will do strange things for something free or really cheap. Lines around the block to save a few cents on gas, crazy lines and customers at Christmas time at Walmart, etc. etc, just to name a few.
I started disliking Vegas when Bellagio started that trend of high end shopping outlets
Amen! We don't go to Vegas anymore and we used to stay at the Bellagio for a week once a year. They've built so many shops, condos and just plain stuff that you can't even see the casinos anymore. It's a concrete jungle covered up with foreign tourists and partying kids. We wish them a lot of luck, but we prefer casinos where you can play in peace and not feel like a bunch of cattle.
