You misunderstand. They don't use travelers checks for travel, they buy them and horde them instead of cash under the mattress they have checks which can be refunded in case of fire or theft. Many immigrants can't even open traditional banking accounts these days.

That is a very clever way to convert money into protected monetary assets in case of natural disaster. Don't want to get into things that immigrants do to survive these days.

Either way it is for certain that the interest rates for savings accounts are minuscule at least in US. I do not know about other places to comment on. The good days where banks offered 4% interest on savings around 2007 because the demand for lending were high. Not so much anymore, hard to convince people to store their money in a non liquid savings for a fraction of a percent interest.

Cannot relate interest rates to video poker as the player needs to control the outcome with their skill rather than sitting back and seeing their money grow over time.

Thanks for the reminder Ted, I forgot to respond to Phil's question about VP in Europe.

The Wizard of Odds (Shackleford) paid a visit to a casino in Malta in 2014. He used the video poker calculator to evaluate their Joker Poker game which was terrible. The following statement says it all.

Video Poker

Like the rest of Europe, video poker is not very popular in Malta. I found only a couple 0.25€ Joker Poker machines at the Portomaso casino. The following table shows the return following optimal strategy. The lower right cell shows a return of 87.25%, which is about the lowest I have ever seen for video poker anywhere.

On Shackleford'site, I also remember hearing VP is not good at Macau either, which is also a fast growing gambling destination in the world.

I personally think if Mr. Dancer knew if VP was better out there than in the US, he'd fly over there if the casino is willing to pay for his flight costs.

I banked, for years at a small private bank. They used to pay around 5% on savings accounts and would pay an extra dividend every 18 months or so. Last year ,they were paying .10% or something. Was getting $2 a month on $25,000 dollars. I used the money to buy ATT and in one quarter earned more in dividends than I'd get in decade in interest.
