I don't play single coin, unless it's my last one, but I think casinos comp on coin in, not necessarily if you play single or max. I occasionally play dollars and sometimes play hundred play nickels. Both earn tier credits at CET in equal amounts. I think that's true pretty much anywhere. Only times I see penalties applied is for 100% machines.
Not any sort of expert on single coin play but at best, you'd get one fifth the comps a max coin player gets.

I suggest playing 5 nickels, as opposed to 1 quarter. If you can find it. Problem is, those paytables are really stinky comparatively - in most casinos, anyway.

I noticed an instant and dramatic decrease in both whenever I have done
so.  For this reason, I always pulled my player's card whenever I played
single coin quarters.  I believe it's better for the casino to think
you didn't play at all than to play that cheap.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------That is great advice! Mailer? What's a mailer? I have never received any mailer from a casino, except some Golden Nugget feelers early on.

Without exception, every time I've played with a player's club card, within a week or two, I've been mailed coupons for free buffets, free play, and free hotel rooms for various dates.

For example: From March 6 - 12, I get $60 free play at Treasure Bay Casino, as well as a free buffet and 2 free nights during that week.
It repeats every week of March.

I get similar offers from other casinos I visit. Are you giving them your correct address? Are you logging in to the player's club online to see what your offers are?

[/quote]A definite must do.  You may be surprised to find what they are giving you for free that you don't even know about.Mailers can offer any number of things like free rooms, bonus free play, merchandise, free food, free parking, discounted services or an invitation to a raffle.  I'm an Elite level player at the Florida Hard Rocks.   They review my play every 6 months based on my play and frequency.  Elite level is the second tier.  The high rollers are above me.   I play about 4-6 hours each week plus at least one 2-3 day trip once each month.  At this time, I'm a 50 cent and an occasional $1 max coin VP player. I have made a couple of interesting observations about their comp system.  If you play single coin quarters, the mailers will stop and your free play will dry up.  That's why I would pull my card if I ever wanted to do that again.  If you're not getting mailers, that could be the reason. My budget on a day trip is 1,000 coins, which is normally $500 if I'm going to play max coins at the 50 cent level.  My regular weekly free play is about $25-$50.  Watching the mailers after a 3 day trip, my bonus free play can be as much as $150 or more.  This is a substantial amount for a player like me. Yes, I play my wife's free play also.   If you play your free play just as you would your regular play, it adds to your daily bankroll.   In the past I would throw it away in the high limit room, which practically never paid off.  I stay out of the high limit room these days unless I hit a big jackpot and feel adventurous.  It's surprising to note that the odds in the high limit room are not necessarily better, sometimes they are worse than what's out on the floor. Some time ago, Bob Dancer made a comment that playing slots with your free play would get you more offers.  I tried it and he is correct, at least where I play.   I sometimes become bored with VP on a 3 day trip, so I do play slots on occasion.   Playing slots will definitely increase your free play and offers.  I'm not sure it pays off financially, but slots are fun if you don't get carried away.   Funny thing is my mailbox is stacked with mailers on a daily basis. We have players club cards for every casino we have ever visited and they want us back, especially the ones with crappy odds.
