Re: Theft in the Casino
Larry, as someone who has worked with kids for a long time you know more than anyone this stuff is common. I think it's weird that a parent would let an unsupervised minor roam free in a casino, but that's their business. Kids make wrong decisions, they're kids. Hopefully, he learned a lesson from getting caught and will decide a life of crime isn't a good plan. If not, you may see him again on the evening news or on a documentary about prison overcrowding.
Phil, my bad. This was not a minor heck this kid (OK i'm old and he's a kid) was 21+ and had a DL to prove it. He was playing in the casino with his parents. The casino has a red carpet strip along the edges that minors have to stay on even when going to eat.

I guess that explains why the Atlantis and Peppermill here in Reno both have their arcades (which I enjoy greatly) upstairs . . .
?????
First off, I'm sorry you had to go through that Larry, what a waste of your time not to mention the evening's enjoyment. Your account indicates you acted with reasonable restraint and without excessive vindictiveness...Also, I never knew you were a school principal....Well done on a worthwhile career.
Second, there are a lot of weird details here....First off, how old was this "kid", considering he had a license? Assuming he was old enough to drive but still under 21, did he "look" young or older than 21? That is the fault of the casino either way, and Larry could have exerted pressure on them because of that....If the casino is allowing underage people/kids to wander the gaming area that's a big violation and opens the casino to all types of possible liability.
Third, given the interaction between the family, they clearly were working in concert in some fashion...Did the security know for certain that these people indeed were a "family" and not just a team? I hope they at least entered their mugs and info in the databases shared by casinos across North America about confirmed or suspected bad actors in casinos.
I also don't like, or even understand why so many casinos insist on putting Arcades so close to gambling machines and tables....Just asking for trouble!
Of course another school of thought previously voiced on this forum by others is that players are solely responsible for their possessions and valuables at all times in the casino, so if someone leaves something unattended and it gets stolen, too bad....Even if you ask casino staff to watch your stuff or seat or even credits while you go to the restroom, because casinos are private property I guess we are all on our own in the end.... I don't like or agree with that but....
Fyi, Tom Brady had his game jersey stolen right out of his locker 15 minutes after the super bowl ended so we are living in a nation of thieves...
Kid was 21+ and gambling with family. This casino is extremely vigilant. I've seen them card anyone suspicious and everyone close to age. Plus they use the new Driver's License scanner.
The "Kid's Zone" is separated by double doors, and security guards, kids under 12 are also secluded in a locked area through double locked gates. The arcade for 12-15 yr olds is only open to kids accompanied by an adult.
You and a later poster are exactly right, I should have never left anything of value. I had honestly forgotten about my headphones since I've just started using them.
PS the thief made off with my 3 cookies from the buffet!

Stupid kid hasn't watched enough movies. Obviously you have to set off an elecromagnetic pulse and knock out the power for the entire city block before messing with a man's jacket in a casino.
First mistake was taking the jacket.
Second, I'm really surprised he wasn't smart enough to leave the casino. Casino security is usually hi-tech and the best our money can provide.
Finally, messing with a man's gift from his daughter is like messing with the man's daughter.
There are a lot of bodies the La. swamps never give up.

Glad this ended well LL but I think this family are regulars in this theft area. Mom's purse cumon. Dad appears with the phones. BS. This entire family needs to be taught a lesson. I wonder if the security ran them for warrants. I doubt it. Edited to add.....I uncovered another scam that i was already aware of. Maybe 35 years on the force ( I won't say which one ) gives me 360 vision. This summer, I hit a nice jackpot and while waiting for the hand pay. I woman comes over and plops down next to me. she pretends to play while I wait to get paid and for a slot attendant to arrive. She had no card in. No money in the machine and you could tell she was just pushing buttons like playing. When security and slot attendant arrived, we stepped way out of the way and I wrote my SS number down on their pad. I never say it out loud in the casino, but have heard hundreds of ss numbers over the years blurted out by patrons excited to get paid. I had security tail this woman and look her up. Of course I don't know what happened, but right after I got paid out of her earshot, she moved on never have put anything in the machine. Obviously trying to get my ss for ID theft etc. EVERYONE MAKE SURE TO WRITE THE NUMBER IN YOURSELF ON THEIR PAD. WHEN THEY COME TO PAY YOU, PUT YOUR COPY AWAY FIRST DONT LEAVE ON THE SEAT IN PLAIN SIGHT. THEN TAKE THEIR MONEY. Finally don't carry your medicare card in your wallet or make a copy with the ss number blacked out. The original card has your full ss number on it. Lose your wallet and lose your identity and more. I can't believe the govt still issues these cards with the entire number on the card.

Cookies!!!!! Why the nerve!
Hey don't be too hard on yourself Larry, I was actually only echoing the views of other posters here who insist we are all solely responsible when in a casino for our belongings and safety....
My personal feelings are not nearly as absolute or extreme on this topic....While it's true casinos are private property, that doesn't relieve them of all responsibility! We still are paying customers and guests, and I still believe in the old days, when the standard was casinos would look after their guests and their belongings with zealous vigilance. You could leave your chips at the table while you went to the restroom or took a break and the dealer's, pit bosses or bartenders would watch them; you could leave your bags, or briefcase, or anything, on your chair and they would still be there! In short, it was all about taking care of you.... That's all long gone now.

Exactly right DB...long gone. Speaking of long gone, other than myself, how many guys always open a car door for the ladies to step in or out of. Always hold other doors for them and let them out first. Never leave the elevator until the last gal has stepped out and when walking down a sidewalk the guy always is closest to the road in case a stray car pops by. I think in the old days, it was to keep them from getting splashed by the mud in the streets from the wagon wheels, but at any rate, all of the above still holds for me. 90% of the gals even the young ones are amazed by this simple chivalry. I even get asked out once in awhile just doing simple things like that.Good thing the Mrs. has the ball and chain clamped on nice and tight and the chain is short.

This is a "jacket" story but not in the casino. We were staying at Bally's in Atlantic City. When we checked out and were walking to the car, I realized I'd left my jacket hanging in the closet. I went back to the desk where I checked out, and asked if I could go back to my room to get my jacket. She directed me to housekeeping. I called them and they said to go up, and someone would let me in. The head of housekeeping met me in front of the door and opened it. There was the maid, vacuuming the carpet, singing, and WEARING MY JACKET! The look on her face was far more valuable than the price of the jacket! Needless to say, I got my jacket back and a very generous voucher to have it cleaned. Crazy, right?

And the maid got to wear a "pink slip" instead of your jacket?

Tedlark, good one! If I wasn't so pissed off, I would have laughed because she looked so ridiculous. She probably would have taken it home with her, or maybe she was just cold

No doubt the jacket was going home with her.
