https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-to-videoMovie industry terminology doesn't count.     First, the high quality and low bulkiness of DVDs began the extermination process, then Video on demand (VOD)  via services like net flix, or Pay per View (PPV) all killed the dinosaur VHS cassettes of 2 decades ago,As for me, rare is the movie like this month's  "Get Out"  that motivates me to do anything more than just wait until it shows up on HBO or SHOW in about 9-10 months after release."Get Out" should find a popular audience with all the closet racists who exist in contemporary American society, since most will not "get" the satirical message or undertones of the film as it skewers AMerica's racist streak.   Just watch the film, it will both scare you and infuriate you (and make you laugh, all at the same time.)

You should get right over to Wiki and let them know. They are not worthy....only   www.videopoker.com  is worthy to receive all my exceptionally brilliant, insightful, eye opening wisdom for FREE.....besides, what kind of a candy-arse name is "wiki" anyway, sounds like the runt of the litter in a family of ewoks.

The question bears repeating FAA, are you wayne or garth??????   Hard to believe its been 25 years since Wayne's World first inflicted itself on the world through Movie Theaters......MOVIE THEATERS!   Another example of a business and source of employment that has greatly shrunk and met its demise thanks to the wonders of modern technological advancement!    Thanks to the internet and all the movie-on-demand services, plus cable TV and its PPV business model, etc.  so many former movie theater chains have dried up and blown away, and the fact that these too were part and parcel of many USA shopping malls accentuates the damage.     Think of all those important summer jobs that college kids used to take at Movie theaters.....all gone!

Not gone in Phoenix. Harkins Theaters a family owned business is still going strong. 19 Multi-plex locations in the Valley alone and they are always hiring. If you're thinking about moving and need a job check this out: http://www.harkinstheatres.com/showbizJobs.aspx

DaBurglar are you sure the word DEMISE was a wise choice of yours to use here?

The definitions of the word demise include: death; the end of existence or activity; the end of something once considered to be powerful.

Movie theaters are still ongoing enterprises and just like Casino Knight's area, there are many here in my area too with more being opened.

Decline is a less incendiary term than demise, but it doesn't matter.....Demise is a process, such as what happened with the retail and shopping mall industries, their demise has been unfolding since early 2000s and is now in its accelerated terminal phase.

Movie theaters are obviously not as kaput as shopping malls but they are not thriving or vibrant despite what seems to be happening in CK's hood. IMAX theaters are one component of the theater industry that has helped it survive more robustly than other industries since it offers something unique and niche like....You can always seize upon some exceptional, aberrational example to try and deny or disprove an overall trend, but it rarely holds water. One obvious exceptional reason why CK's area has a viable theater presence is the climate....Phoenix is miserably HoTT most of the year so venues like theater complexes offer climate controlled entertainment that is a premium for people in that particular region.

Competition and alternatives to theaters are numerous and growing, and are not just from the internet, like Netflix, nor other in home options like cable, satellite and ppv options. Theaters have always regarded things like sporting events, concerts and a plethora of other outdoor "event" activities, like theme parks too, as some of their primary competition. It's obvious their best times are long gone....

The industry and institution of movie theaters will manage to survive for another decade or so, more easily in some areas than others. But it is dying nonetheless....Will it evaporate totally? Not in our lifetime, but Hollywood is already drastically changing its paradigms, such that soon studios will soon possibly have their own TV channels, their own web based subscription services, etc.
