A similar hand to the one under discussion here is a W678 four card straight. On this one, you play for the straight unless the fifth card is a 3, in which case you draw to the deuce alone.

Thanks, all you straight shooters! The math is so refined on this one. So the excitement factor of holding just the deuce will cost that sliver of EV. I'd play this by ear in the future. Sometimes, you yearn to take that shot. Others, you opt for the straight shot.

You can't trust math Its a fickle mistress. It's not the math aspect that baffles me here, as the difference between the two holds is minimal (basic strategy in fact ignores the penalty card) - it's the notion that I'll play it one way at times, and another way at other times.

Basic strategy ignores a lot of situations in a lot of different casino games. Multi-card 16 vs 10 in blackjack is one example. BS says to hit when in reality, it's best to stand on most of them.

Sure, but that's because not all 16s are the same. They can have different compositions and can be dealt at different true counts (if you are counting). In the case of a video poker hand, there are no differences in the instances of the same hand. They all contain the same cards and are all dealt from a fresh (simulated) deck. The correct play is the same every time.

depends on the true count not running count if u r using hi lo!!True for most index plays but, as it happens, 16 vs T can be done using the running count only for HiLo, since the index to stand is zero. Same for 12 vs 4.
