Re: COVID-19 Casino Impact
Vman said it all: Vaccine efficiency.
There are several organizations rushing to find a vaccine for COVID-19, but there is a big difference between a highly effective, safe vaccine that the FDA will approve, and a trial vaccine with unknown efficiency and safety. Don't delude yourself into convincing yourself that an effective vaccine is on the way. Were that true, we would have already found safe and effective vaccines for HIV, malaria, dengue, and other persistent diseases.
As I stated before, and as Tedlark wrote very adroitly, the single best defenses we have at present for COVID-19 are social distancing, unending washing of hands, and refraining from touching the face. If these practices were rigidly followed by every single person in the country, COVID-19 could be controlled.
At the risk of offending anyone, I am hopeful that this outbreak will also cause the U.S. to take a very hard look at its immigration policies and practices. Historians have painted Ellis Island as a place that was very cruel to potential immigrants, but in fact many diseases were caught and immigration refused through those "cruel" practices. I don't think it is at all out of line for us to insist that those who visit or move to our country be completely free of contagious diseases, no exceptions.

Name a Republican mayor in a "big city". I have little faith a Republican mayor would have done better anyway. Big cities will get hit by this WAYYYY before anywhere else since people often travel to big cities. Not BFE. Also 12 of the 15 states with the highest population densities have Democratic governors.notes1 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 10:33 amVman, have you looked at the hot spots on the map? the areas that may be underprepared? they are largely located in typical democratic controlled areas. nyc, LA, washington state, wayne co (mich), cook co (chicago), new orleans, many of these areas haven't voted rep since ww2.
every misstatement you make, you lose a little more credibility. you were always so exact when talking about VP, but you will spout just about anything on this subject.
and, no, one does not have to be a trump supporter. no one disagrees about his sometimes childish behavior, his tendency to hype/exaggerate, toot his own horn, go ahead, call him out, i won't disagree. but, to be accurate, make sure to list all the accomplishments.
i might not like my doc personally, but if he/she gets the job done, i stick with them.
And let me be clear, I feel like most leaders, regardless of party, haven't done enough. But Trump should be the clear LEADER in this crisis. George W. Bush was GREAT after 9/11. Giving him his highest approval rating of 90%!!! Trump has had some of his highest approval ratings too during this... at 49%. Lol But instead of real action, I still feel he likes to pass blame around and make unrealistic claims, "I'd like to be open by Easter." I guess you can be open if you want to put more people's lives at risk.
Oh here I'll praise another Republican, Asa Hutchison and Arkansas. It's not as much as it probably should be, but considering most states aren't giving anything extra to nurses to my knowledge, it's a start. Also Arkansas isn't in a full outbreak yet, so this is much earlier response than other states have done.

of the top 20 most populated states, there are nine republican governors. and, none of those states are experiencing anything close to what to what is happening in the dem controlled states of ny, ca, was, ill , la and mich.
my wife has been an RN for more than 40 years, so i have a lot of respect for healthcare workers. but, healthcare workers, just like school teachers and every other government employee, still have jobs and are still getting paid. and, now, many of these same paid folks are going to get an extra check from the government. stupid! unlike, the millions (3+m claims filed for unemployment this week) of workers who lost their jobs due to CHINESE virus and forced government shutdown.
the healthcare industry has faced multiple 'crisis's', from aids and now coronavirus. they should have the proper protective gear and in most of the country, they do. they are highly trained and also highly compensated, dedicated pros and with an aging population, absolute job security. i am grateful for their service.

M is decently compensated now, but when she was in Missouri, a deep red state now, not so much. And Florida definitely will be struggling with this in two weeks. Desantis was stupid and kept the beaches open too long. Here is some cell phone data from a beach over spring break.notes1 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 11:52 amof the top 20 most populated states, there are nine republican governors. and, none of those states are experiencing anything close to what to what is happening in the dem controlled states of ny, ca, was, ill , la and mich.

Spring break tourism was more important of course. Lousiana is now seeing the effects of keeping Mardi Gras at full swing. And yes, Jon Bel Edwards was wrong to hold Mardi Gras too. But many people across the political spectrum kept acting like this was a "nothing burger" on 2/25/20. But by my 40th birthday, 3/20, most people nationwide knew this was a serious threat, but Desantis kept the beaches open. Here is some cell phone data from spring breakers. And yes, many of them went back to New York. So New York's own behavior is also at fault. Stay safe, Phil.

And comparing this to HIV/AIDS is inappropriate. How many health care workers, food workers, grocery store workers, emergency personnel got HIV/AIDS just by doing their job? If your wife has worked for 40 years, she's probably retired, but how would you feel if your wife died just because of her job? M is at much less risk than most in the health care field right now, partly because I told her to persue her dream in pediatrics thank God, but I'm still quite concerned.

the florida beaches should have been closed earlier. the mistake was assuming the younger generation, who claim to be responsible, would abide by separation orders. they didn't!
in the first week of march, nyc mayor was still telling citizens to ride the subway, gather in groups, go about their normal lives.
according to the CDC, in the initial aids breakout years, dozens of healthcare workers were infected. and, what was more deadly, aids in the 80-90's or coronavirus now.
my wife is still working, less than full time.. there are many, many careers, outside of patient care available to those with an rn degree. her greatest risk now, is a paper cut.

Just because some people have caught HIV caring for patients, I still think it's a very, very poor comparison. 58 confirmed infections from 1985-2013 for contracting HIV while working on a patient.notes1 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:35 pmthe florida beaches should have been closed earlier. the mistake was assuming the younger generation, who claim to be responsible, would abide by separation orders. they didn't!

As of 3/25, about 9% of Italy's positive cases have been healthcare workers over 6200 confirmed so far. https://www.epicentro.iss.it/coronaviru ... %20ENG.pdf.
Italy has had almost 58 doctors DIE already due to Covid-19. Real damn heroes. Probably will exceed it by Monday.

Also an INFANT with Covid-19 died today in Chicago. Ugh. M is unsure if it was at her hospital or not.
I'm also glad to hear your wife is in a low-risk situation. Many health care workers are NOT.

Don't worry, I'm pretty much done with this. Not like I'm convincing anyone here anyway. I hope within one month from now that I can sincerely apologize to all of you and say, "My thoughts over this were all wrong because "it will just disappear" just like the most powerful person in the country said."
Until then, wash your hands and try to avoid people everyone!

Vman, we are all guilty of getting threads off-track, me included. I think Webman needs tp get this under control. Just my view.Vman96 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 5:09 pmDon't worry, I'm pretty much done with this. Not like I'm convincing anyone here anyway.
