Re: February videopoker.com contest
There are a couple other ways to make the top scores within reach. One is to make the score for hands other than the royal flush relatively higher. This will require just a bit of thought and I realize that what follows is a made-up game, but there would many more ways to catch up than just hitting a royal. Just a couple sets of quads or straight flushes would be all that was necessary to catch up or surpass one of the luckier royal flush draws.WinPoker-like statistics for 10-coin adapted game with Double Double Bonus-like pay lines:

Certainly this would bring in more strategy and more chances to catch up with the top score.(I adjusted the return and variance statistics to reflect 10-coin wagers instead of 5-coin wagers.)

Another way to make some contests more strategic and a little less subject to luck is to lengthen the number of plays.I know that most seem to favor 100 plays, but in the crucial games when you were lucky enough to get one or two big hits and you just need one more, it is much more fun to have the extra tries that 200 plays will allow.I realize that most of the time when you haven't had even the single big hit, 200 plays seems like too long...but you always have the ability to quit and start over without finishing, so I really don't understand why this would be a problem.Perhaps a mixture would be best, sometimes allow more plays (or maybe split the difference and go to 150).

Another way, in my estimation, to reduce the Royal effect would be to allow credit reduction just like for real. Having hit a good score early on in the challenges at times one winds up holding on by the skin of their teeth or losing it all.

Even if it doesn't totally reduce the royal effect, it certainly does give someone an incentive to cash out early and "lock in" any winnings.

Leave it to new to find the weakness. OK! Only 100 hand scores count.
