Re: broke my golden rule and it cost me
I believe I saw Bob also state in one of these forums, if you can't play at Maximum Bet level, learn the strategy for less than full coin, which can be very different.
I tried this for a while, but it makes it less likely to get that elusive Royal Flush, and have decided to stick with Max coin strategy even when I am playing less than that (which is most of the time).
May not be in my best interests, my counselor has warned me about getting that "big hit" and the thrill that comes with it. This can turn a recreational gambler into a compulsive one in a hurry.
Yeah. One of the most common forum questions I have answered repeatedly on multiple sites is: why did so and so's VP trainer tell me to hold AQ7 hearts instead of AQ hearts at 9/6 JoB? The answer has always been they were playing on 1 credit where the royal was 250 for 1.
As for Phil's games of choice...
"Illinois Deuces" (no deuces):

Max coin: JT, QJ, QT suited all better than inside straight draw and 3 to straight flush Ace-low. KQ, KJ, KT suited better than 3 to straight flush Ace-low.

Less than max coin: JT suited all better than inside straight draw and 3 to straight flush Ace-low. QJ and QT suited only better than garbage. King high two cards royal draws unplayable.
8/5 DDB:

Max coin: 3 to a Royal better than 4 to a flush. QJ suited better than 3 SF no gaps and no high cards. KQ, KJ suited better 4 to inside straight w/3 high cards. KT, QT, JT suited better than face card only.

Less than max coin: 4 to flush better than 3 to a royal. KQJT, QJT9 unsuited and 22-44 better than TJA; TJK; TQA; TQK; TKA suited. 4 to inside straight with 3 high cards better than all 2 to royal. JT, QT, KT suited just hold high card only.
And yes getting the big hit could lead to you being more compulsive. But I'm still pretty hooked on this game and I haven't got a royal in over two years at the casino!
A $6750 online poker tourney win in 2009 got me more compulsive with online poker though until "black Friday" helped squash that for me.

That's actually one of the personal issues that led me to the Cheap VP strategy. I'm a "Big Hit" junkie. Playing max coin quarters is boring to me because all you can win that qualifies to me as a big hit is a Royal and they don't come along often if at all. Playing dollars or higher is more my style, but I can't stomach the losses of playing negative game $1 or higher max coins all day. So in order to have a shot at a dollar or higher jackpot, I came up with a progressive strategy that allows me to play higher denominations about 10% of the time. With my $250 a day bankroll, I normally get to play at least 500 hands or so at a higher denomination that I can afford to play while keeping my daily loses at a minimum. It works perfect for me because it solves two of my needs at the same time; wanting to play more hands with my money and having a more frequent shot at a $1,000 plus jackpot. Waiting 45,000 hands for a $1,000 royal flush is not fun for me. I would rather have a $1,000 quad deuce once a month. I get my share of Royals, but I'm not counting on them. When one pops up for $4K like happened last spring, it's like hitting the lotto.

It did not cost you anything. Either the A or J of hearts would have had to been behind the Q of clubs for you to have hit Royal. On each deal 10 cards are dealt into 2 5 card registers. Each of the 5 cards you are dealt has a specific card already in place behind it.

According to Billyjoe that might not be entirely true.

It would have had to have been a VERY old VP machine, Rat, for that to take place. That approach left along with the $0.99 Vegas shrimp cocktail. Technology has moved on

FWIW, it even left well before the $0.99 shrimp cocktail... Golden Gate offered one until April 2008, but they bled money from it until finally increasing the price.

I'm still learning so this might be a silly question. After being dealt 5 cards you hold x number of those cards. Regardless of how long you hold them before drawing does the RNG keep the remaining cards in the deck cycling or at the beginning of your hand you're dealt 5 cards and another 5 cards are held by the RNG until you hold and hit draw. Thanks for all the excellent info to all forum "posters".

The current generation of VP machines have several 'enhancements' to ensure that there is no pattern detected in the presentation of the cards. The RNG in today's machines continues to run, shuffling away. The microsecond that you hit "Draw" triggers your replacement card selection process.
So, how long you wait CAN impact the final result - either positively or negatively.
