Easiest game to learn near perfect strategy?

Post by Notspock »

I'm fairly new to video poker.  What little I played was Jacks or Better.  Which game would be best for a newbie to try and learn the best strategy?

Do you have a program to help teach you?

I thought Deuces Wild was pretty easy. Plus it's fun, low variance and has decent pay tables out there to play on. I think it was a good game to start with for myself.

Eduardo,

No training program at the moment.  I had a shareware download of "Video Poker Hunt" but lost it when my computer crashed.  It appears that it is no longer available as free share ware...or at least all the download sites won't work for me.

I may buy the Bob Dancer program.  Do you have a recommendation?

MikeA,

I've played some DDB on this site......I'm not strong enough to carry enough money to cover those losses unless they start make bigger denomination bills.

I do understand!  DDB, though one of the easiest games to play perfectly, is one with a very high variance.  Matter of fact, it kicked my butt out in Vegas last week.  I just never got on one of the runs where I could hit enough quads to keep me in the game!

Notspock, I have only used the Bob Dancer VPW (video poker for winners)so I can't speak to any other programs available but other people can. It does everything I needed it to.  There is a free trial so you can give it a shot before you buy it to make sure it's what you want, and if you are a gold member here you can get $20 off VPW too.

Any of the software programs are probably sufficient for a new player. If you are concerned about price then download vipoker, it's free. Once you have more experience you will want to check out some of the other programs with more capabilities.

WM, I would still like to see a category for software products.

Even though they don't always offer the greatest paytables, wouldn't JOB or Bonus Poker be the easiest programs to learn at? DDB is fairly simple but there's a lot of hands where depending on paytable, a solo ace may be worth more in EV than two face cards etc.

You've had several recommendations and they are all reasonable. I would add one additional thing. Are there casinos near you where you plan to play? If so, you should find out the best games available at those casinos and let that help you decide the game.

DDB is fairly simple but there's a lot of hands where depending on paytable, a solo ace may be worth more in EV than two face cards etc. There are a lot of personal preference going on here "youbonash."  Personally, I find DDB a very easy game.  It was the first I took up after JOB.  I chose JOB first simply because it is about the lowest variance game around and I wanted my BR to last as long as possible as I got the feel of VP in the casinos.Later, after playing what I thought was JOB on a multi-game machine and after hitting a quad and getting 250 for it instead of the expected 125, I became hooked on DDB.  I would not suggest that DDB is the "best" game to take up as a first endeavor but not because of the ease or difficulty of learning.  I would even discourage it because of the variance for a beginner at VP.  Anyone who can learn JOB strategy should be easily able to learn DDB strategy maybe as a SECOND option or SECOND game.Bonus Poker and JOB definitely are potentially easier on the pocket simply because of the variance and for that reason along with ease of learning, is why I would recommend JOB or as you say, "Bonus Poker".
