Play on or Quit

Post by pokeherguy »

There are obviously some very smart people in regards to vp on this site so I'm wondering how they would handle the following situation.
The game is single line $2 DDB at max play. You have a long history of play at one casino and have done pretty well . A new casino opens up much closer that has the same games and the same exact paytables. You spend about two years playing at the new casino but the vp play has been bad . You can make 10 trips to the old faithfull casino in a month and its vp business as usual got my A's with kicker a couple of times along with everything else one would hope to hit. I can go to the new casino 10 times in a month and end up with far less of everything . Most folks would say don't go back to the new casino . But when you consider the amount of hands played at the new casino and how I am behind in basicly all jackpot hands the law of averages says I should be in for some nice trips. Right?

So my question is would you keep playing the new casino and hope for things to turn around or surrender and run back to old faithfull?

I'd probably go to the casino I had the most fun at.  I as a general rule, don't have a lot of fun when I've gone into a casino more or less expecting to lose and have my paranoia born out with yet another losing session.Throw logic out the window.  Think about how gratifying it would be were you to have just an "average" session in both.  At which one of the two casinos would you come away with your endorphins all giggly?  That's the one I'd head for.

Stick with Old Faithful as your main place, but pop into the new place now and again to see if you can get something going there.

I agree with MikeA's reply where he says that during a bad run at any one place you begin to get paranoid ("Am I ever going to win here?" )  That's no fun.  It's true that with machines with the same paytables and from the same manufacturer and running the same game software your chances of winning on a given day are the same regardless of where you're playing.

You can go through long periods of time where you do well at one place, and very badly at another.  But it does even out eventually.  You may begin to tank at your Old Faithful in a way that makes your play at the new place seem like a breath of fresh air!

Now you see what I'm getting at. I've got about 10 years under my belt at old faithfull and every year is practicly a mirror image. The only thing that has changed over all those years was I went from playing $1 denom to $2 denom about thelast 5 years of play. My amount of play has gone up also but along with that came the jackpots. I play a good bit of vp and old faithfull has produced as close to predictible results as possible for lots of years. I see no evidence of this casino tanking and have no problem saying that on my next 10 trips there I will hit my share of jackpots. As far as the new casino goes I have lost almost all confidence in seeing the same results but at the same time I realize when we play we are dealing with odds in regards to hands played. Given the fact that I'm way down odds wise in virtually every handpay I should be due for some great trips. Thats what I keep expecting to happen but thus far I just keep digging a deeper hole to crawl out of. I don't know why but my 2 years of play at the new casino has became pretty much predictible also.

MikeA I have tried to throw logic out the window but its so hard for me to do because I trust in the numbers. If I lose trust in the numbers I lose interest in playing the game all together. Now as far as an average session goes without question I would play at the new casino because i'm am so much closer to home. I drive by the new casino almost every other day while the other is well out of the way for me. I actually enjoy the fact that the new casino is so close and the people that work there are great. They really make you feel welcome and go out of there way to come by and say hello and check to see if you need anything. Old faithfull pretty much has the "screw you and die attitude". So theres no question as to where I would prefer to play. I've got two voices in my head at the same time. One says trust in the numbers everything will be allright but the other says run for your life.

I have had similar experiences as I've mentioned previously. The closer of two casino I visit happens to be the one I lose at. This year I am down over $3K. At the other casino I am up nearly $14K. This pattern has also been going on for 10 years with only a couple of times it did not hold.

A couple things to note. I play more at the casino where I have won so those results are based on more play (the machines are more comfortable, more plentiful and have better graphics). I have talked with other people who have had the exact opposite experience. Therefore, I realize this is just one of those things. However, there is no guarantee it will change ... EVER. I don't play enough at any particular casino to guarantee I will eventually win. As long as I win overall I will continue to play at both places.

The closer casino is 50 miles away and the other casino is 150 miles. It's at least an hours drive away no matter what. This is one reason why I don't mind driving the extra distance. Now, if gas prices would come down that would be really nice.

If I were you I would try to play more at your lucky casino but keep visiting the other casino occasionally. This should reduce your losses if things continue as they have been, but keeps open the chance that you'll be there if your luck flip-flops.

Thats probably the best advice I could hope for. You have mentioned the similar experience and I did take mental note of that. As far as not playing enough at any one casino to ensure that the tide would turn I've spent my share of time punching buttons there. I'd be a happy camper if $3K was all I was down, fact is I wouldn't sweat it if I was standing at $14K in the negative. In my mind this place owes me some fantasy sessions that involves some serious stacks of cash.

I also have two casinos in LV where my luck has been less than stellar. While I haven't experienced large loss amounts I understand it gets frustrating to continue to lose. Let's hope your luck changes quickly and you experience a couple of those fantasy sessions real soon.
