The strength to get up and leave after a quick win
One of my biggest setbacks at the casinos is if I win to quickly after arriving...The closest casinos to me are about a 90 minute drive and since I have a bit of a gambling problem I am trying to limit my visits to every 2-3 weeks so as a result I don`t get there real regularly..Anyway usually I decide I am going up there earlier in the week..Maybe a Tuesday the thought enters my head.."OK Sunday I'll go up the casino"..Once that is decided I oretty much have to go and I`ll spend the rest of the week looking forward to it..Then the day comes and I go thru all the rituals of driving up and parking inside or out depending on my recent luck..I go in and find a machine based on what happened last visit and what area or machines seemed "hot" (I know it`s all just in my head) and I sit down and start to play and BAM! 5 minutes after arriving I`ve won $500 or $800 or whatever..I know I should take it and run but I spent all week looking forward to going and drove all that way and haven`t gotten it "out of my system" yet and I just can`t stop and usually lose the money back or even half of it and then get in that "Gee I just had $800 now I only have $400. I want to get at least that back"..Etc.
Is anyone else here like me or would you find the strength to get up and go even after only 5-10 minutes there?
I think maybe once or twice over the years I went in and hit real quick and somehow cashed and headed out proud of myself...The last time I went I ran into a friend I have made up there and after I won and was still in gambling mode I sat and watched him play for almost 3 hours and kind of got it out of my system by cheering him on.

On my last trip to Vegas I quit playing after 4 hands. I win.

Does not, or has not, happened often enough to consider. Usual train of events is to reach my 'limit' per casino before any big strikes.I too have a casino a little over an hour away - just do not go very often (twice in the past year). Usually wait for yearly trip to Vegas. There I have a set limit, time and money, to 'play with' per casino. Which ever is reached first... move on to the next one. To me a large part of the fun is the trip itself. Don't get me wrong .. love to win and do at times. Just play not to lose beyond my wallet. When the big hits do come I cash out .. put out of the way all above original bet plus one third of the winnings. Sounds strange but it works for me and I enjoy the whole thing either way.

There's a couple of things I do:
I keep records for every session in a spreadsheet. That includes a graph showing my $ ups and downs for the year. If I hit some early winners in a session I think about seeing my next data point on the graph go up, and being able to admire it until my next session. That's usually enough to get me out of the casino and on my way home.
If I REALLY feel like a little more play after an early winner I'll just switch to a lower denomination than my normal quarters play.

My nearest casino is about 1hour 15 (pretty close to your drive) so I don't think I could get up and leave in 10 minutes even if I won big. I drove a long time and came to have some fun!
If you have a "gambling problem," maybe you should go less frequently than every 2-3 weeks? Even for someone without a gambling problem, that is quite often! I often lose more than I should (but never more than I can afford) so I try to limit myself to (at most) 4 vegas trips a year and 3 (at most) indian casino visits a year. I guess if you lose more than you should but NOT more than you can afford, that's okay. Just be careful!
We had a neighbor when I was younger who lost his wife, his mercedes and his million dollar house to gambling. Another family friend lost his house and just about everything else. Fast forward years later and henow lives in a teeny condo he rents so always good to pace yourself.

Welcome to forum, SaraTG!
I love and welcome a good hit ANYTIME during that casino visit! However, optimum would be when I have had that casino fix, am ready to leave and win a bundle. As in walk out with my winnings.
Another optimum is also hitting early and playing on THEIR $.
I am better off going to a casino by myself, with the exception of my husband. Once, I went with a friend and would have been ready to leave because I had a $1400 hit in the first ten minutes. It would have been unfair to expect her to leave early just because it suited me. A few hours later when my friend was ready to leave there was a huge dent in that $1400.
Thanks for using RED in honor of the great RED WINGS! GO WINGS!

[QUOTE=cddenver: If I REALLY feel like a little more play after an early winner I'll just switch to a lower denomination than my normal quarters play. quote.
IF I feel like a little more play after an early win, I'll switch to higher denom. At which point I set a goal allowing me to lose X amount before I must switch back to my original denom. um, it's called self discipline. Starting out at a higher denom just might, read probably, eat through my bankroll too fast and abort my planned session early.
As per earlier discussion, I always thought all gamblers have a gambling problem...with maybe marie as the exception. er, it's called denial.

Sadly enough Sara you just described my gambling to a tee. Happens to me all the time. Rarely do I leave after a big win, whether its in the first 10 minutes or 10 hours. I always justify staying. If I win early then I have not got it out of my system, if I win later, well heck suddenly Im hot how can I leave?
I live right down the street from 3 Casinos so this is almost a weekly occurance for me. Bless Maries heart, self discipline, um yea not happening here
For a person like me (and perhaps you) I like cddenvers idea (Thanks cddenver!) Because we just like to play sooooo much and have no self discipline next time I win big I am going to switch to a lower denomination, i.e. I LOVE the 10 play or quarter machines in a casino, next time I hit big am going to go to the one liner nickol poker. Actually looking forward to trying this and seeing if it helps.
Good luck to you Sara

That helps too, RF. I'll be playing for-real and hope that the last Benjy gets slurped down quick so that I can speed home and see if any of the players in my "Watch" list have passed any of my daily scores.
