Going on first trip to Harrah's New Orleans in January, 2010. Would appreciate any assistance regarding video poker machines, food, etc.

Great casino....video poker pay tables not that great but we have enjoyed all 7 trips to this casino. Lots to do outside the casino as well. Have fun!
I hit three Royals on a trip to New Orleans and two were in this casino, but that was years ago(pre-Katrina when we could get non-stop flights and go for the weekend for about $100 in airfare). Went this summer and didn't win big, but had a lot of fun and if you are staying at the casino hotel, it is fabulous. People are so nice and the rooms are great.

dsettino,
I hope you enjoy NO Harrah's. The odds are pretty low like most Harrah's but the casino is nice and the hotel is too. We were there last March and we found one bank of decent 9/6 DDB 25¢ machines on the inside of the main walk not far from the multi-hand 5¢ machines. I would recommend you check vpfree2.com for the latest recommendations for Harrah's since they may have changed.
Make sure you go to Jackson Square, the mall on the river and we always recommend walking a few blocks to catch the trolly to go to the garden district where we go to eat at Houston's Restaurant. If you are into history check out the Eisenhower World War II museum.
Also check out the French Quarter just use good common sense.
Best Wishes,
Lucky Larry

Go to the Roosevelt Hotel, not far from the casino. Very historic and ornate. There is a bar there right out of the 1930's, very authenic. As Larry wrote, you *must* use common sense in New Orleans..avoid the 7th Ward, the lower 9th Ward, and anyplace in East New Orleans. Uptown is wonderful, and, like Larry wrote, don't miss the Garden District homes.
In the French Quarter, if approached and asked to bet on where you got those shoes you are wearing, the correct (and only answer) is "I got dease shoes on my feets on Bourbon Street!"
