Enhanced Driver's License update v passport

Post by marie meijer »

Because we live in MI, a border state, visit Canada and sometimes Windsor Caesar casino, forum members often ask me about EDL and passport requirements. There are four border states that offer Enhanced Driver License. They are Washington state, VT, NY and MI. (OHIO has NO plans at present to offer EDL) The EDL costs $15 more than the driver license in WA, $25 more in VT, $30 more in NY and $20 more in MI. MI EDL: $45.Other states where there may be significant discussion re EDL are AZ, CA, ID and TX. Advantages of EDL over Passport: less expensive and easier to carry. They can be used for car, boat and train travel to Mexico, Canada, and Bermuda. AIR travel still requires a passport. RE Passports: $110 plus $25 application fee. It is less expensive to apply for a passport form at a post office near you that handles passports and complete it yourself. Some photo stores and some post offices will charge up to $25 for passport pix. Walgreen's Drug store offers them for $8. Some online passport sites charge $170 for passport or lost, stolen, damaged replacement passports. $19.95 prepaid passport insurance. Additional passport card may run $29.95. There are more fees including an expedited fee for a rush processing/delivery passport. Above quotes subject to change. Birth certificates and drivers license are no longer accepted for travel to Canada as per June 2009. Stolen passports are in demand.
