Going for Four VP

Post by baldie »

Ran across this game at Buffalo Thunder casino in NM.

If you hold 3oak and fail to draw the quad or end up with 3oak after the draw (held two caught the third) you can draw again after making an additional bet.  All of this is possible only if you make the max bet which varies according to denom. played.

Has anyone seen this game in Las Vegas?  It was fun and profitable for me that day.

Thanks for any info.

Ah Buffalo Thunder - that's one of the best looking casinos in New Mexico.  I haven't seen this game in Las Vegas, but I haven't looked.  Watch the max bet at BT - it's usually twice what's normal on slot machines.  (If normally $4, it's $8 there) If you're heading south on I-25, you might want to stop at Sandia.  It's right before you get to Albuquerque at the Tramway exit.   The game you're talking about gets very expensive, the additional bet eats money like a hoover.  Did you hit a 4oak?  I never did, and gave up quickly wondering where $$ went.

It is beautiful and it was only a one time shot driving through there.

$.25 max was 20  $1.00 was 10.

I hit five 4oak's one being aces/kicker.  So it was very good to me but I saw another player dump a load into the one next to me and not hit a lick.

This game has been around for about six years and is discussed on the Wizard of Odds website (and a few others).  It is more complicated to analyze because the second draw is not always from the same number of cards (since the cards discarded on the first draw are not replaced in the deck before the second draw). The Wizard of Odds site only discusses 7-5 Jacks or Better and 9-6-5 Double Bonus.  It doesn't say whether other variations or other pay schedules are available for the game. (Edit:  Since baldie says he got aces with a kicker, I guess the game must be offered on other games like DDB or TDB.)I sometimes wondered why this game is not offered here at videopoker.com since it is an IGT game.Sidenote about this game:  The Wizard indicates that he doesn't know if the game would offer the bad bet that would occur when the card required to make quads was discarded on the 1st draw.  E.g., suppose you were dealt KJ suited with 853 of different suits.  After the first draw, imagine that you ended with  KJ 555.  There would be no reason to pay again to draw to 555 since the case 5 was discarded on the first draw...that is, IF you remembered that one of your discards was a 5!Since this is after the first draw, the player would have to be particularly astute to recall the exact discards that are no longer visible in order to make the correct decision IF the game in fact does offer the possibility of this bad bet.

If there is a TDB variation of this game, I wonder if you are allowed to hold a kicker on the 2nd draw or if your only option to keeping the results of the 1st draw is that you must draw 2 cards to the bare trips, even if they are aces, or twos thru fours. One could ask the same question re: DDB, but it is less crucial since the max EV draw is generally NOT to hold the kicker.

No there is no way to hold a kicker.  Doesn't give you the option on any game.
