AC closed again!
For the second time in a year, Atlantic city shuts down because of a hurricane. Exactly what this city doesnt need.....especially revenue-pressed Revel. I received e-mails from the Trop and from the Atlantic club that as of 4 pm Sunday, all AC casinos are closed and all guests evacuated. This happened last year in the middle of the summer due to hurricane Irene, and now with the approach of Sandy set to smack the entire Northeastern portion of the country, AC goes dead, and probably will not be able to reopen until Tuesday afternoon at the earliest, depending of course on what the storm does to infrastructure and power outages. NYC is totally shut down as of 7 pm tonight, so I would expect AC will be completely dead and dark into Wednesday morning. This will only make the properties in AC all the more dismal and desperate with regards their October revenue numbers. I was planning on heading back to AC on November 6 for 3 days, staying at Resorts and AVOIDING all Caesars properties for the time being. I wonder what it is like in AC when it is 100% shut down and deserted. I've been there during the slow months of February during tuesdays and wednesdays when the city averages less than 50% occupancy and THAT feels like its dead. Must be SPOOKY as hell to be in one of those Huge properties when it is totally empty.... ANYHOO....I'm in Western Massachusetts getting ready to watch this storm dump a crapload of rain, snow and wind on us, I only hope the power doesnt go out like it did LAST year during that freak snowstorm.....btw, during last year's freak Halloween snowstorm I got STUCK in AC for a whole week because the power was out in Western Mass for 6 days, and since I was in AC when the storm struck last year, my brother called me and told me to STAY in AC due to the awful conditions. That was a truly bizarre and unique experience if I ever had one..... ANYONE ELSE staring at this storm and preparing for the worst??

We once were stuck there after a presidents weekend. When we went to checkout they told us there was no where to go all the highways were closed so we stayed another day. It was kinda cool to be there with barely anyopne else!

In Dec. 2008, we got stuck in Vegas for 2 extra days during a snow that closed the airport. But, we found the will to survive.

Congrats, Larry -- don't know how you managed it!

The Casino's still had their weekend business. The monthly revenue will probably be down a little. I was in AC when the State of NJ didn`t pass a budget and the casino had to closed because the Casino Commision where not permitted to work. So therefore the casino was not aloud to open. We just hang around the hotel and the boardwalk in our comp room and eat and drink for free.

This is awful....they evacuated THE ENTIRE CITY, 30,000 plus people shipped northwest into Pennsylvania and elsewhere. AS of noon, parts of the Ocean City are underwater and around NYC there already is massive flooding. The worst is not supposed to hit until 4pm all the way until after midnight EST. wtf are they going to do??? with 10 foot storm surges predicted from Delaware to Connecticut, the entire coast will be submerged for at least a couple days, longer if the storm hangs around like it might!!! The AC board walk and all the properties along it are doomed if this happens!! We could be looking at MONTHS of problems in AC, similar to what happened down south after katrina.

The boardwalk is being turn apart. The boardwalk that is along the Inlet is now floating up Pacific Ave. All the sand they pumped on the beach in front of Revel, Showboat, and the Taj-Mahal is gone. www.pressofatlanticcity.com ,

Until AC addresses the huge gaps in the quality of service that exist at most of their properties, and by gaps I mean the inconsistent nature and outright absence in some cases of basic good customer service principles, nothing will change. The way they market themselves, and the fact that the perception amongst many gamblers is that "no one really wins in AC", are also things that need addressing. Consider this, and this is a point I never hesitate to make to any AC employee or manager who will listen: I live in western Mass, and for as long as I can remember going back 5 years or so, I have seen numerous and regular TV ads for Las Vegas, as well as the local Foxwoods and Mohegan sun properties. I even see occasional ads for upstate NY casino resorts. I have NEVER, EVER seen 1 stinking ad for AC or any of its individual properties, not ONE! I mean, wtf? I can vividly recal, back in 1989-1990, prior to the Trump Taj Mahal opening, there was a concerted ad campaign for its opening. Tell me why, when Revel came online in April, they never bothered to run a single ad up here in the northeast? It makes no sense, and I dont want to hear about AC "writing off" this part of the country, because if they did, then that is part of their problem right there. I make the trip down there, and I know for a fact a lot of people who visit the two Native American casinos in Connecticut would gladly visit AC if they were targeted with, say, a room package or free slot dollars. People up here are SICK of the Mohegan and Foxwoods experience. AC has potentially so much more to offer, if they bother to offer it!!! But they dont..... Edited to add: It is almost unbelievable, but the exact CENTER of this storm passed directly over Atlantic city starting 30 minutes ago! I mean what are the odds??? The biggest storm since Noah and the friggin floating zoo aims directly square for AC....talk about luck, or lack thereof! Anyway, it is true, most of the properties along pacific avenue are now flooded on the ground floors....seems the water came in from and down the streetside, not the oceanfront side. Pacific Avenue is now a running river some 4-5 feet deep and the marina area is a submerged swamp. No way these places will be up and running within the next week, maybe longer. Tony Rodio's words that this will NOT be as financially draining as Irene will be proven wrong....he didnt factor on a shutdown longer than 2 days, tsk tsk. Properties like the Trop, with its main xasino ABOVE the street level will be ok, but just about every other property with a casino that empties out directly into the street/Pacific avenue will have serious water damage to overcome. I shudder to think about it.....
