Ever help a friend win a jackpot??
I went to Taj yesterday and decided to play some hold'em. I went over with a few of my fellow Showboat dealers and we had some fun. We went to dinner, played some poker, then I got the VP itch. I told one of my buddies that I was going to go have a cigarette and play some VP for a little bit. He was interested in watching me play as he knows about my good run of VP this year.
Well, he decided to put in $100 into a Super Times Pay machine that was next to me. He asked which game he should play, what he should bet, etc.. I started him off, giving him at least the basic strategies for the easier holds, and while I played, I kept an eye on his machine to insure he held the correct cards. Then it happened..
He had a 5X multiplier come up with a pair of aces on the deal (playing DDB.) He also had 3 to a royal, but I told him to stick with the aces as I showed him the payouts for quad aces. He held them, and on the 2nd line, got drawn A, 3, A.
He didn't even realize what had come up. LOL He said what did I hit? The machine isn't letting me bet anything. I proceeded to tell him he had just won $2500. Needless to say I was jealous (but happy for him ) because it was his 1st time playing. I told him afterwards not to expect that all the time as he had gotten very lucky to hit something like that.
BTW, he did offer me some of his winnings for helping him with his 1st try at VP but I declined. I told him to buy me a soda sometime.. LOL

I've had it happen the other way around. Sitting to a lady at AmeriStar in KC last September, playing a horrible paytable version of DDB. I had a hand with a pair of Kings and three to a Royal that included the Ace. She told me incorrectly to go for broke and hold the 3-R. In that case (holding the ACE) you really should hold the high pair but it's so tempting, therefore I had drawn her attention to it. I did follow her advice and actually drew the other two cards to the Royal. She wouldn't accept anything I offered her. Nor have I ever accepted anything from anyone I've helped.

Mike-Ive been playing STP since it came out and NEVER got aces with the multiplier (hubby got it with the 2X one once!) Your friend is very lucky! Hey have you spotted any Multistrike STP at the Taj yet? Did your friend hit it ni the smoking area near the lobby??

Barb,
Me neither. I've hit the aces without the kicker with a multiplier (2X), but not with a kicker. One of these days... LOL
The Multistrike STP won't be there for a few months I'm assuming. I know that Showboat isn't getting them until the end of the summer, so Taj will probably follow suit.
Yes, my friend hit the jackpot on the 25-cent STP right along the aisle in the new smoking section.
I've been playing the All-Star machines quite a bit now.. the ones with all the multi-hand games on it. I've played Chase the Royal and Trade Up Poker quite a bit lately. I haven't hit a royal yet in Chase the Royal, but in Trade Up, I've done very very well. All 3 times I have played it I have cashed out at least triple of what I started with. I know it's just luck, but I am growing to like that game.
Have you ever played trade up? It's pretty neat. In Triple Play, you only have to bet 15 credits (which is a plus compared to STP since JOB will get your money back..) and if you get a dealt 3 of a kind, you have the option to "trade up." If you trade up, you risk your guaranteed 3 of a kind payouts for double the hands to draw to FH's or quads. For example, you get dealt 3 aces, you trade up, and now you have 6 hands to get your quads. It sucks when you don't connect on any Fh's or quads because you don't get paid anything for 3 of a kinds, but I've been hitting quads pretty frequently on this game. Plus, the DDB version of this game pays 275 for quad 5-kings! I've done the best at the 5-play version in which you get 10 hands in the trade up feature to get your quads.
I'll definitely add a little bit of play with trade up poker in the mix with STP. I already have a bankroll that I am going to stick with, and I've decided to limit my STP play to only $200 per day until the last day of my trip so I don't hit a real cold streak and risk losing more than I want to before my trip is over. Wednesday night is my last night there, so I'll probably do a "last hoorah" and do a nice STP session. I'll keep ya posted on how I do.
By the way, I was there a few nights ago and someone got dealt five 5's on the triple play $1 joker poker progressive for $12,000. It's nice to see hits like that.

I will definitely try the Trade Up. It sounds very interesting. We also have limited our STP bankroll. It was just too easy to lose a whole days bankroll in just a few hours, waiting for that "big hit". The down and dirty is that if your good hands arent in synch with the multiplier you are not going to come out ahead. The only times I walked away winning was when I hit my goods hands when I got the multiplier-and that doesnt happen very often! We havent been to AC in a few weeks and I am getting very antsy!LOL Keep us posted!
And of course-good luck!

Barb,
Yes, the Trade-Up game is pretty neat. The only negative thing I have found about the game is the "trade down" in FH payout. The FH on max bet pays only 30 (ouch!) but the extra quads you get make up for it, plus the min quad pays 275, so you can get some big hits.
You're exactly right about STP. If you don't get a multiplier with one of the big hands you hit, you're screwed. Plus those sessions where you just can't pull a flush or a straight on ANY hands when you're drawing one away kills you.
I'll most likely play quite a bit of DDB, Triple Bonus, Joker Poker single line games.. those nickel DB progressives in Nickel Oasis, and Spin Poker. I'll probably end up playing more slots than usual too since my mother and Susanne like to play those, too. I do like their selection of penny/nickel slots at Taj. The last night will be the "make it or break it" night with STP, Trade-Up, etc.. I'm keepin my fingers crossed! LOL

Mike, best of luck! Let us know how you do. 30 for a fullhouse is terrible! I was playing trade up on this site-did you know they had it?-and it payed 40 which I thought was low. 30 is OUCH! However I did really well--better on the triple play than on the 5 play in regards to 4oaks! Not what you would expect. Im hoping to sneak in a trip this coming weekend if my plans with the grandkids fall through. If not, definitely 6/23-6/24! When is your trip? I will send out winning vibes

Barb,
The trip starts today and runs through Thursday morning. Should be a good one for cashback. I'm signing my mother up for a Taj Card and I'm using the "refer a friend" thing from the Maharajah Club to get the matching bonus cashback. Not only will I get my own cashback from my fiance and I playing, but I'll also get my mothers (and my father is using my mother's card too!) To make it even sweeter, today AND tomorrow is double cashback! Knowing from my trip experiences in the past with them and with the double cashback, I should get well over $500.
With the trade-up, I last longer on the triple play usually, but I've had the higher payouts on the 5-play when I connect on more than 1 quad in the trade-up feature. I guess it will all depend on what kind of mood I'm in.. whether or not I want to last awhile, or try for a big hit. LOL
After this morning you won't hear from me until Thursday afternoon and then I'll post a trip report in this section of the forum.
Talk to ya in a few!

I was playing by a man who was not playing well at all. He finally asked me how come I kept winning. I shared with him some of the basics. I told him I would keep a watch and help him if I saw something. He laughed and said, "Alright!" Within a few minutes after promising to help him he asked me what he should do as he had Ace, King, Queen, Jack of Spades. I suggested he hold it and then have the machine bring him up a ten of spades. Please note this was in sequence and he was playing a sequence progressive royal. He said, "What happens if a ten of spades comes up?" I told him you win a few dollars. He had a huge smile on his face and was thinking maybe ten dollars if he won. I was waiting and hoping it would happen.
Finally he hit the button and the ten of spades did come up! He was so happy and finally asked how much and I said, "Well you are going to have to get your license out as this is taxable. You see anything over 1,200 you have to pay taxes on it. You just won something in the area of $29,000."
I was afraid he was going to squeeze me to death! I am not sure two grown men hugging is looked at with right thinking but when people saw what he had done and he was hugging them too they understood.
He wanted to give me some of the money but I told him no. I was happy to see him get lucky and delighted he won. I was wrong about the $29,000 it was a little over $29,900 that he actually had won. I did suggest he buy a book on playing video poker because this was likely the only time in my life I would see this happen--most of us lose if we don't play smart.
