Players who don't show emotion...

Post by DezJeep »

I often see players who have hit JP's that show absolutely NO emotions.  As a matter of fact, some of them look pissed off.  I just don't get it. I've seen players hit RF's and just sit there and pick their teeth or take another drag off their cig.  I know some people spend lots of money and probably don't win enough to cover their losses but if you're that unhappy when you win I would say it's time to stop gambling. My wife is a slot floor person at a local casino.  She tells me stories of winners who actually yell at her (while she's paying off the JP) about how much money they lost just to win something. Sorry, just venting...

I like this post, excellent point about grumpy players.....  But I'll offer a possible motive/explanation, based on my own playing experience (everywhere, not just in AC for the benefit of Tedlark)  When I hit a royal (usually just playing 25 cents so it doesnt involve handpays unless its a porgressive)  I will usually smile and say a low key hushed "yessssss!" or pump my fist once, but thats it.   If players are near me they can hear the credits accumulating and they look over, but that is ALL the attention I want or need.    And that is the issue, or my point, the ATTENTION winning draws. It is generally NOT a good thing for all the obvious reasons, so some players compensate (or overcompensate) by looking ornery and pissed off, which deters and discourages some would be thieves or (worse in my opinion) agressive beggars and mooches.   I am sure anyone who has played in the wee hours of the morning (2am to 6am) has had some half drunk, or cracked out idiot sit next to them and start on some story of how they lost ALL their money and need to get home, blah blah blah.....or some other simp / symp story.   If you are a recent winner it only serves to encourage people:   "Cant you spare 20 bucks ??? you just won a 1000 (or more?"     That could be one explanation of these stoic, seemingly miserable players.

I'm nice to the attendants and the other people around me if they say something, but i dont do anything to attract attention - more than the machine flashing anyway.if i hit kickers or aces for 400-800, i usually just hit the button really quick so neighbors dont hear the credits accumulating for 45 seconds.if the wife is close by, we motion to each other using sign language on what we hit (not necessarily when we hit it) or if we are together, an occasional high five. Now, if the person sitting next to me - you know the one who bangs the hell out of the buttons, gets p'd off on every single hand, constantly is huffing and puffing each hand - if i hit quads or something nice, i will sometimes make an effort to let them see it /  point it out to them, as this normally runs them off in a fit of rage.  :)Scott

It's also nice to be able to say to them something like:  See? - the machine responds a lot better to gentle treatment than having the crap beat out of it.

I'll usually play quarters or less denom because of bankroll limitations. I muttered a few expletives the first couple of RF's I hit. After that, I also stay relatively emotionless if I hit as I too, don't want any attention. If you care to share, more power to you. Just understand that you may get some unwanted company with your good fortune.

I very recently cursed at 4 deuces dealt. I had good reason. I had been playing $25 and $10, but switched to $5 exactly 2 hands before the deuces were dealt. I think in this case a little cursing is justified....

Back in 1993, I won a sequencial royal at the California in LV for $25,000. The lady next to me started beating on me, screaming at what had just happened. I just sat there. It was like being in shock. I saw it, and I was pleased, but I didn't react. I have no idea why I didn't, but I didn't. I am not usually a demonstrative person, but I do a great fist pump, and a few really good, "YES YES YES"s when I have gotten a royal, but in that instant I just froze. Sometimes, there is no explaination for people's reaction to a certain situation. I  still remember that moment very clearly and the only thing I can say, is when it happens to you, you think you will react one way and it sometimes comes out different. I did see a moment when clear thinking should have been in control but wasn't. At the old Showboat in Vegas, I was next to a lady playing Caribbean Stud. She drew to a Royal and she was so excited, she grabbed her cards to show her husband who was a few feet behind her. The dealer almost jumped across the table trying to stop her, but it was too late. $65,000 gone in an instant. You cannot pick up the cards even though everyone saw her win it legit. Ow!!

Who's been lurking around watching me play VP.  I tend to be a very non emotional jackpot winner.  Don't get me wrong, I can get chatty when someone wants to talk about it, but I think I always just try and keep to myself.  If someone wants to talk to me, than fine, I'm game, but I've never jumped up, yelled, or anything, not even when I hit my 20K jackpot in the middle of the night.  I was probably too tired. Don't get me wrong, I usually have a marching band going off in my head when I hit a jackpot, or a "holy crap, I really needed that one".  But the one night, when they just kept coming and coming I remember it being, "well, I've dreamed of this all along and it's finally here".  Again, no outward emotion. I try and be nice to folks, but sometimes I just want to be in my world.  When a nice old lady hits something big sitting next to me, I'm often happy to give her a nice congrats.  But do understand, I play in NJ where if you've never played, you'd be blown off your chair by what people say and do.  If you've ever watched mob wifes and sat there with your mouth open, well, that's casino's in NJ.  As my wife's friend says about mob wifes, "those are my relatives"  We NJ folk are an aquired taste.  Sometimes I can't even take it, but there are always those who are the nicest, smartest, kindest there are.  NJ is a real cross section of humanity.  Were not NY, where not Philidelphia, we are who we are.  Everyone should give it a try. So, next time you see me in Harrah's and I'm sitting there like a statue waiting for my attendant to bring me some cash, feel free to chat me up. Some day we should have a contest to see who can figure out who the other guy is.  I'm sure I've sat next to a few of you guys/girls at my local casino. Roveer

while trying to be in my normal state of mind today playing (i normally dont make it out during a weekday afternoon), the "older" crowd was in abundance. two elderly gentleman to my right were conversing for about 20 minutes about one of their prostate surgeries - and how nice it is that he doesnt have to pee every 20-30 minutes.

god bless sir, i could only laugh and hope i'm that happy at his age playing vp and not having to pee...

From personal experience sometimes I'll have an emotional response and other times I'll just sit there without a big response. Some hits come after working hard for them and others are just wonderful surprises.   It also depends on the environment around me. I'm more likely to share when there are other regulars or family playing in the area.
