strategy for this hand?
Playing 9/6 JoB, I was dealt this hand:Qs 4d Jh 8h KhI thought the proper play would be to keep Jh and Kh. I got a strategy error pop up.Jh 8h Kh expected value = 0.5439Jh Kh expected value = 0.5412The strategy charts I have indicate Jh Kh is the proper play. What am I missing? Why should I keep the 8h? Thanks!

JhKh is the correct hold. Are you sure you were playing 9/6 jacks or better? Where were you playing, i.e., whose strategy was it?

Confirmed 9/6 jack or better at wizardofodds.comWhen I received the strategy error, I click on "ANALYZE" button.A hand analysis window opens and displays all possible hold choices ranked by expected value.J8K comes in first at 0.5439JK comes in second at 0.5412QJK comes in third at 0.5153When I look up the appropriate strategy, "JK suited" appears to outrank "J8K suited", so I'm a bit baffled here?

Hmmm, I'm not sure what's happening on your end. I did the same thing with Wizard of Odds and the analyzer came back with JK suited. Also confirmed with WinPoker on my iPhone, hold JK.

Ditto. According to the wizard, the value of JhKh is .575085, and JhKh8h is .543941.

Dan, Your tutor was at the one-coin setting where the Royal Flush pays off at 250 coins for one coin bet rather than at the five-coin setting where the Royal pays off at 4000 coins for 5 (or 800 for 1). Many experienced players "know" that KJ is the correct hold and, since they never or rarely play only one coin, don't know the one-coin strategy. To complicate matters, even the Basic one-coin strategy favors KJ suited over KJ8 suited. With the hand you indicated, the Q hurts the straight chances of KJ enough to reduce its value below the KJ8 value. So, many strategy tutors may not catch this; however, a hand analyzer should. If you always play 5 coins (and set the tutor correctly), then you won't run into this problem.

Dan, I just tested this. I think you were playing one credit. When you play 1 credit you hold 3 to the flush. 5 credits JK. Interesting puzzle.
