it finally happened last night...
no, not a royal. or even a jackpot.
I finally got quads after changing my hold. i was dealt Ax8x8 and i held the ace, then realized i had eights. so like thousands of times before and falling into the (you never hit once you make a choice) category, i changed my hold cards - and i finally got the other two eights for quads.
conspiracy no more!!!
overall, i got smoked on the night but finally broke down a barrier!

What game were you playing? Are you saying that you were only going to keep the ace but decided to hold the 2 eights instead? If so you made the right decision. I can't think of a game where statistically it would be to your advantage to hold the ace over the 2 eights.

I always hold a lone Ace in TDB over a mid-pair (5 through 10).

Interesting. I decided to do a five play session of TDB. BTW congratulations, at the time I played you were in first place on five play for the day. I did the training mode 100 hand session to see what would .happen..
During the 100 hand session mid-pair and lone ace came up 3 times. In all three cases the training mode suggested keeping mid-pair over lone ace. I am not sure how big of statistical difference there is between the two choices as this training mode does not tell you that. I am not trying to be critical but was curious.
I hit 2 small 4OAK's during the session and was only down by about 250 credits by the end of the 100 hands. The only other surprise was on one of the hands I drew AKJ of clubs and a J of diamonds and a throwaway card. I was surprised when the training mode suggested throwing away the pair of jacks and going for the royal flush while only holding 3 to a royal. Again, I have no idea what the statistical difference is between the two choices.
I can see where TDB could really be fun if you were fortunate enough to hit one of the better paying 4OAK's. Especially if you got the kicker. I guess you have to be patient though and have a lot of intestinal fortitude.

My interpretation of his post is that he was preparing to hold the ace only because, initially, he did not see the pair of eights.

In dreamcard, playing TDB if dealt A - crap - 8 - 8 with dreamcard activated, the dreamcard will plop an 8 in there, thus giving you three of a kind so you can draw for the fourth 8. HOWEVER, sometimes when I am either WAY ahead (which is rare, or WAY behind (which is common), I will change the dreamcard to another ace, thus giving me a pair of ACES to draw for the other two aces, with a possiblity of getting the 800 credits or the 4000 if i get a 2, 3 or 4 as well..... TDB is either a blackhole or a winner , rarely is it somewhere in between those extremes. Still, the majority of the time, I will keep the three of a kind and go for the fourth for a payout of 250, or a full house....because three of a kind only pays 2 to 1 though, it is always tempting to toss the non premium three of a kinds and go for broke.

So, the only thing left to do is play training mode again until you get three more opportunities with lone Ace and mid-pair. Override the training, and hold the lone Ace. See how you come out, better than your negative 250.
