What is the first family car you remember?

Post by olds442jetaway »

1948 Nash Club Coupe. Black with blue tweed interior. It was very well used and had high miles when my dad bought it in 1953. Had been a salesman's car. I will never forget the one time I got a ride to Kindergarden in it. The rest of the time I walked to school which was about a mile away. By myself too. No big deal back then. Sometimes he let me step on the push button starter on the floor. No key start then. Now the cars have gone back to push button start. Our first family car and we never had more than one. I remember helping dad put a new piston in the engine in the driveway when I was 7. It was only a 4 cyl and pretty easy to work on. No radio though or frills of any kind. Got us through a few New England winters though.

I do not remember the year of the car, but my dad's FIRST CAR (we lived in Chicago, and we had to live within walking distance of the train station so Dad could go to work downtown), was also a Blue Nash (Rambler, I think). You turned a key, and then you had to pull the column gearshift lever toward you to start the car.

His second car, if you can believe this, was a 1957 Chevy !! He didn't know what he had back then, of course.

Why the heck didn't he leave that car to me ?

Early 60s Dodge Dart station wagon with the pushbutton Torqueflite automatic transmission. Started with a key tho.

I remember very little about that vehicle, Olds.  All I do know is that it was a Rambler and it was a station wagon.  Guessing early 60's model.  I do, however, remember the next vehicle was a 9 passenger Pontiac station wagon with NO power steering.  Took and passed my drivers test in that baby back when I could parallel park with ease....was tough, but fun.

Small world Billy Joe. After the 48 Nash and well worn Pea green 54 Chevy that smoked came a beautiful 4 year old 57 Chevy Belair Tourquoise and White with the 283 V-8 and power pack. Unfortunately, when it started to rust and smoke a little, dad traded it in on the first new family car. A 1963 black Mercury Comet with all the goodies right off of the showroom floor. How I miss that 57.

Our respective dads must have gone to the same high-pressure car salesman.

It was either a 1963 or 1964 Chevrolet Belair. I don`t remember the exact year.

I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. The guy that had the car lot that sold dad the 48,54, and 57 has a son that operates a used car lot in our town. The son is now about my age. I made the mistake of buying a 1981 Pontiac Gran Prix from him for the wife in 1986. Beautiful car. Silver with maroon leather and factory mag wheels. Unfortunately a complete lemon. I should have learned my lesson after we found out the 48 was very hard to get parts for, the 54 had been in a major flood, and the 57 had been spun back a lot. I think the wife's Gran Prix was a spinback too, but back then it was an easy job to do and hard to detect unless the numbers weren't lined up right or you found a receipt in the car with a different reading on it. Such is life. Live and learn I guess.

1982 Buick Skylark, 1985 Monte Carlo, 1989 Grand Prix...we also had an El Camino in that time frame, but I forget the year.

My Dad worked for GM from 1984-2007, so the bias is pretty clear.
