Dangerous Strategy Pulls Out Another Trip

Post by FloridaPhil »

We drove to Miami for a quick overnight VP trip.  As usual the Hard Rock Hotel and the casino were great.  Thursday was bonus free play day and we had $150, so off we went.  The both played 98.9% quarter deuces wild and never hit a quad deuce or a royal.  As usual my wife stayed at quarters and I moved to dollars on $40 run ups.  By Thursday night she was down about $100 and I was about $250, which is about normal for never hitting a quad deuce or a royal.  Nothing was working, so I decided to use my old CS strategy on the dollar machines.  I put in my first $20 and played single coin until I won 4 coins. Switching to max coins, I hit a wild royal for $125, cashed out and put in another $20. To make a long story short, I hit two more wild royals and got all my money back.  I was waiting for a $1,000 quad deuce, but it didn't happened this time.  I'm not going back to CS all the time, but it is the most exciting way I have found to play VP and does come in handy for pot shots.  What happens happens..  Note: CS is a mathematically absurd way to play VP.   However, if you play for the experience more than the long term
gain, it's very exciting and
just plain fun.   Yes, I knew the risk and was prepared for a $250 natural royal.  No, I wouldn't go back to CS all the time.

I respect your trip and your CS decision. Video Poker needs a wider tent and broaden it's horizons when it comes to play, especially on tighter pay schedules. I do not play CS, but will defend your right to play vp as you see fit. Understanding you give up a little of ER without the bonus royal, it may be a equitable trade-off to play longer, or play with a better pay schedule with a higher denomination, or enjoy oneself without a significant bankroll...the important thing is to play according to your particular wants and needs and goals....yah.Anyway, cheers and thumbs up on the fun!
Video Poker needs a wider tent and broaden it's horizons when it comes to play, especially on tighter pay schedules.
I think I'm getting a handle on the differences between VP players and it's all good.  Players like me are playing for experiences.  Math players are playing for profit.  I enjoy playing against the machine on a daily or trip basis.  When I come home even, I'm happy.  When I come home ahead, I consider it a win.  What happens long term is not that important.   To me a significant win is $500 or more.  When playing quarter deuces a $250 quad deuce does not excite me.  I don't have enough faith in my game or my odds to play dollars all the time, so my best enjoyment comes from a game with low play cost and occasional dollar jackpots (CS).   Unfortunately, I also enjoy hitting max coin royals, so I'm torn between the two strategies.   I don't advise anyone to play like I do.  It works for me and that's all I can say about it.

A word to the wise is sufficient.
I once worked on a farm that had electrified fences to keep the animals from wandering.
Most animals caught on to them pretty quick. Not the mules. Such is life.

Wish I could send you the 98.8 Bonus Deuces game that is in the dollar All Star machine at Mohegan. ( 800/1 ) for bet 1 too. CS would be a blast. I am going to have to try it next time. Just play the center line using CS following the usual rules. If the Royal hits, good for 800 bucks or 4k depending how you hit it. 250 or 1000 for deuces quads. I can handle that too. The triple play and 5 play has tapered way off and got too expensive on the dollar machine. I think I will go back to the CS drawing board as well. Last night's trip was a bust too. No quad deuces and only one wild royal. That was playing 3 lines too.
Not the mules. Such is life.
For sure and there will always be some ass around to point out everyone's errors...
I think I will go back to the CS drawing board as well.
CS was designed to limit losses and extend play on a negative expectation VP game and for me it works perfectly as designed.   In addition, I find it much more exciting than grinding it out at max coins.  The only negative that I have found is the occasional short coin royal and that's normally offset by lesser max coin jackpots.VP is about having fun.  Nobody should care how you play the game.
