Hitting quads back to back

Post by wilcoxfun »

I was playing a progressive quarter machine. I hit fours so hit for a hundred dollars. I then hit another quad of eights for $62.50. Good news this happen twice that day. Left the casino up for six hundred dollars. Enjoy having back to back quads twice that evening.

You hit back to back quads two different times that evening? I don't want to imagine the odds of that one.

I can only remember one back to back quad lifetime. At McCarran actually...lol

What you're so giddy about isn't all that rare.Depending on the game, quads happen about once every 420 hands. That means once every 420 times you get a quad you'll get another one on the very next hand.If you play 630 hands an hour, you'll get a quad once every 1.5 hours on average --- so it will take 280 or so hours of play to get two of them back to back. A lot of players play considerably more than that every year. It's not something that happens to you every day or even every month, but it's hardly a "once in a lifetime" event either.

I been playing VP since 2009, this year playing 60,000 hands a month and have only seen back to back once. That was early this year. I'm with Vman on this one, it might be a once in a lifetime.

Bob, I agree with what you said except for the typo (should be "you'll get 1.5 quads each hour on average", but your final answer of once per 280 hours is consistent with your figures).  However, I think the thing that makes this a little more unusual is that the original poster stated that he had this happen TWICE in the same evening. It's a little more difficult to explain the calculation that I did so I won't try (except to say that it included 12 matrix multiplications of 5x5 transition matrices).  If we assume that the probability of a quad on each hand is 1 in 420 as you suggested, the odds of a single back-to-back quad set happening in any set of 4096 hands is about 43.3 to 1.  Like you said, it happens, maybe only once a year if someone plays that many hands a little less than once a week, but more often for someone who visits a casino every day. However, if we call the event that we are looking for hitting back-to-back quads more than once in a single set of 4096 hands, the longshot odds increase to 3789 to 1.**  Even if one plays every day, this would suggest an occurrence on average less than once in 10 years.  And many people may not make that many trips in a lifetime.I picked 4096 hands because this calculation is a bit simpler if the number of hands is a power of 2.  Of course the odds would vary with a different assumption (or with multi-hand play).**For ease of calculation, I assumed that we would need at least 4 quads to qualify for hitting back-to-back twice, which is to say that I did not count a back-to-back-to-back set of only 3 quads UNLESS the next hand was also a quad.  Counting the rare 3-in-a-row event would bring the odds down a bit, but probably not by a lot.

I know I had back-back quads at least once this year. Luckily, one was dealt.

Getting a second quad within 10 hands is also slim. That is why I've never played ShockWave VP.

Yeah, "twice in the same night" makes this seem pretty unlikely. That's why I asked for clarification.

I want to share with all this was first time to get back to back in the 15 years I have been playing video poker. To have it happen again that same evening was shocking to me. None of these were dealt quads.
