Trick hand holds
Are there any trick hand holds that increase the chances of hitting a royal flush?

You could hold 2 to the royal, or even 1 to the royal for a better chance at hitting a royal flush.
The trick may be on you though... in the end it will cost more than it's worth. But if your only goal is to hit a royal, then just hold anything that might make a royal.

I know some pretty big gamblers who will hold a 10 on job instead of drawing 5 cards

You can try holding royals cards as long as it’s not a major error.
For example, on 9/6 job, if you are dealt with hand like HA H10 HQ H6 C10, the optimal strategy is to hold 4 to flush. But i don’t think holding 3 to royal is a major error. So you can hold 3 to royal and you won’t sacrifice too much overall return. Just my 2c.

Some times I'll hold a suited KQJ over a high pair.

This is always true in 9/6 TDB, which I play most.

If you don't care about optimal return, you can argue to hold 3 to a royal over a pair face cards to increase your chances.
