a little hope for seniors

Post by notes1 »

according to an interactive map of florida (i am sure they exist for all states), SUMTER county (pop 125k), located in the center of florida, has 4 total virus cases and no deaths. i find this interesting because sumter county is home of THE VILLAGES. as many of you know, the villages is a mega retirement community, and the county's population is 60% over age 65.

with an older population and likely corresponding medical problems, it would seem like a place where the virus might hit hard. but, at least up to now, it hasn't happened. one of the things that makes the villages different is a lack of youth, the very age group that is more likely to be carriers of the virus, without showing symptoms. the villages has strict restrictions for age minimums and visitors, along with those allowed to even purchase a property.

this is not an anti youth post. but, maybe an warning on how to survive. if one, like me, falls into that vulnerable group, it might be a good idea to tell the kids/grandkids not to visit, until there is a medical therapy or vaccine.

on a side note, this mixing of old and young, might be why italy is experiencing such a massive death toll. italy apparently is a large-family based society, where interactions are frequent, families live close together and congregate often for meals and gatherings. while this maybe a wonderful way for families to exist, it may be the very cause of their oversize death rate.

Italy, Spain, and France, do have more generation mixing than we have at regular home meals. They also have many more public gatherings of regular groups of friends and many more watering-holes, bars, cafes, and street food venues.
From what i have seen, the public groups tend to be of like generation and age group. However those public groups tend to be tight and close.
Sounds like from todays info. that Europe may be in serious trouble. Praying that the drug cocktail treatments are as effective as hoped.
Cutting off European flights, along with the Chinese, may help moderate things down here as China has.

"AMERICA STRONG" !!

A large Italian family in Freehold NJ has had 4 or 5 family members contract the virus and die after a big family gathering for dinner about a week or two ago. You are not even safe from family members.

Very sad, but what were they thinking? Social distancing means avoiding contact with everyone, including family members outside of your household.

old habits and generational ways of living are hard to change, especially when these italian families live so close to one another. not an excuse, just a reason, and they are paying for it.

sumter county fl, home of the villages, now has 8 cases and still no deaths. florida has nearly 1200 cases.

as expected, a number of college students, who went on spring break, are now coronavirus victims. 6 students at univ of tampa alone are infected. i would be interested in actual numbers of how many of these students are now sick, after putting themselves (and others) at risk. those who went and are infected, should be showing symptoms this week.
