Re: Video Pokeritis??
I have a major recommendation for machine makers. Have a draw-deal button on both sides. I never understood why they insisted how you needed to play. I think those with ailments would learn to "go both ways," as they say.

A "wired" remote would be nice too. Wonder how long that would stay attached to the machine after being played by a hot-head?Remember those speakers at the Drive-in Movie Theaters? Man, I'm really dating myself now!

My dearest Marie M., haven't you heard that one side effect of Parkinsons medications is in fact increased or total addiction to gambling? I read an article recently about a man who drained his bank account playing slots for the year. Darn thing was, he hated slot machines or any kind of gaming for that matter but because he was on Parkinsons medicine, he subconciously went gambling everyday and apparently, couldn't get enough. His MD took him off the meds and the gambling abruptly ceased! He ended up gambling away $80k and no way to recover his losses or lost time from work.(true story)

Thanks Ed da Cat. I believed my friend and also your story re Parkinsons but just had not heard of that side effect before. Just when I thought I was on top of lots of med. stuff, something new crops up. While writing that entry, Michael J Fox and the rest of Family Ties cast were on a talk show discussing old times. What timing. Anyone else remember that great show - it's been 25 years!

I've heard of many people with Parkinson's having problems with gambling. I believe it is even well documented on some of the GA sites.
Also, my granddaughter has ADD and the medication made her life much, much better (as well as her parents). BTW, she is as thin as a rail and plays outside all the time. ADD is real.

Hey guys,Do you think they make Video Poker machines uncomfortable on purpose? Last trip to LV, we spent some time playing a Monopoly game somewhere and the position of the game to the seating was so very comfortable. Makes you think they would rather have you playing there. BTW (just bragging here) I started playing with a five-dollar bill and cashed out over five hundred dollars. Being a VP player, I just naturally hit "max play" and it paid off for quite awhile. Took my win and went back to the back-ache corner for more VP!

I really never have understood why they chose those particular ergonomics for Video Poker. I'm sure it has something to do with the design of slot machines. Makes more sense to keep those machines in similar type containers. But with slots, you really have only one button to push and I suppose you do about as well hitting it with your heel...certainly with either hand to change up the position. Not so with VP. More often than not, I'm cashing out of a session of upright VP because of pain both between my shoulders as well as in my lower back. Most of the slant top machines are better, but eventually, they get to me too with the lack of leg room.

Well Shadow I never meant to suggest that ADD wasn't real, as I know in some cases it indeed is necessary to take medication. I do however feel that the medical field is quick to diagnose things today based on little information about the patient, especially pertaining to children.
When I was young, as I'm sure you can relate as well, kids got along just fine without meds for depression, hyperactivity, etc. Maybe it has to do with our diets these days, who knows? But the reality is we live in society with a fastfood mentality. We want to take a pill and be fine in 5 minutes. Sometimes warranted, other times I'm not so sure.
Marie, I'm sorry to here about your friend. I'm sure they are lucky to have a friend such as yourself to help cheer them up. I have heard of several medications that can cause an increase in gambling. I believe the "restless legs syndrome" meds have this effect also.
Sorry if I pi$$ed anybody off. That wasn't my intent at all. But between myself and various family member's recent "doctor" run ins, I'm beginning to wonder if some of them even know what they're doing. And we have some great doctors here in Louisville.
One recent example is when I was in an auto accident last winter. The ER ran all kinds of tests, x-rays, CT scans, etc. and said my shoulder was just "bruised". After two days of excruciating pain, I went back to another doctor and he could tell I had a shoulder seperation just by looking at my posture. Turned out to be a grade 3 seperation with 2 torn ligaments! VERY PAINFUL! I missed work for a month and nearly needed surgery to repair it, but luckily I didn't. So I guess it's hit and miss with doctors these days. And I would always recommend getting a second opinion.
On a side note. During my month off of work, arm in a sling, I still managed to hit two royals for $2K each!! . I guess it was a good thing it wasn't my playing arm.

Shadow I heard rumor that those affected by ADD may be attracted to gaming under ADD meds similar to Parkinsons patients. I'm not sure how valid that is as I'm not a doctor. I remember how shocked I was when Michael J.Fox announced he had Parkinsons.MikeA and JM, there are those on this website who don't even know what a drive-in was let alone those little wired, corroded speaker boxes that hung on the window. Were you allowed the luxury of tuning in the movie on your cars AM band? Enough reminiscing!
