Aw Mike, yer so old fashioned. Here in Ca., am broadcasting came out earlier part of the 70's doing away with those corroded wired speakers and posts stuck in the ground. Food at the snack bar made casino snack bar food taste four star. Back 3 or 4 rows were usually for AHEM! Back there, you wondered WHY the windows weren't fogged. Hey CD, you could lay on the hood nowadays but you'd put a big ol' dent in the hood requiring about$3-500 bodywork.       
 
We found if you parked just right, you could have one speaker on each side. Hey! It was stereo to us back then.

  Stereophonic broadcasting was exactly that. Kind of like left and right transmission of a mono recording. You know exactly what I mean.

Columbia, now that was a label. I hear his Master's voice or other voices that tell me to do things.

I seem to recall back in 1792 I think it was, joining one of those record clubs.  You paid something like $5 and got 100 albums with the agreement that you would purchase something like 10 albums over a 12 month period at "regular club prices".  They sent me a list of thousands of albums to choose my 100 from and I found 100 of them that I felt I wanted.  True to their word, those albums showed up on my door step soon after I "joined."But over the next 12 months, I had a very limited number of selections of albums that I could purchase to fulfill my end of the agreement.  I don't think there was a single album offered during that time that I would have ever considered buying and the "special" club price including shipping was about three times what I would have paid in a store!And after the obligation was fulfilled by me, the club continued shipping albums to me unless I sent in a form telling them NOT to send them to me.  If I didn't "opt out" then I was committed to buy the album shipped.  Finally, I had a letter prepared and notarized that I sent to them stating that I wished to be taken off club rosters and that in the future, any albums they sent to me would not be paid for and would not be returned.  After I sent back the albums they sent me without paying for them as "return to sender" they finally quit shipping them to me.I've had the same type experiences with "book clubs".  Quite a racket back in the day!

I think the parents of the man you mention must have named him "Columbus" because of the negative impact that club had on their lives!  Are they still doing that?  One would think that the Internet distribution of music these days would make such "clubs" obsolete.  I hope so!

  Hard to believe but Columbia House music club still exists and they continue to try to get me enrolled! BMG music club is another one that sends junk mailings. I like about 5% of their stuff and own pretty much all I want. They don't deal in obscure music albums/CD's.

It is really amazing how we went from a sore wrist to Record Clubs.
