AP, I only lost 10.9% of yesterday's figure. Still not ahead. But, spared a second consecutive torpedo, I at least feel better.

Portfolio investors cannot be nimble. We're simply at the mercy of the markets. Every change needs a signature and they go by deciles.

Set it and forget it. I have no idea if I'm up or down for the year and since I'm not currently buying, I have no need to care.
Invest in solid companies and move on.
The only stock I follow carefully is Tesla. I was doing quite well buying low and selling high and the swings were predictable. Buy at 200, sell at 250. Rinse and repeat. I had no idea the stock would explode as it did, and I got caught when it happened. Only 6 shares, where I was trading 100 lot shares.
Silver is making a nice move right now.

History says that will be how people vote. Have posted the facts before. Especially when it comes to the S & P 500. Could be a false sense of security, but that’s what people do. I would say that 20 out of 23 elections is a pretty good track record. RR defeating Jimmy Carter was one of the exceptions. I don’t expect anyone who posts here to vote that way just because of the S & P , but the average voter, who unfortunately is much less informed about things and doesn’t know a thing about our history in general probably will.

I think it's cute that you think the average voter is less informed than folks here.
So what you are saying is people here are going to vote the way they will, regardless of the stock market, but the uninformed average voter is going to vote one way if the market goes up, and another if it goes down?
OLD's is not the only one. Repeating a quote from Winston Churchill:
"The best argument against a democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter".

Also consider a fact pointed out by a college professor years ago that: "the average U.S. citizen could not pass the exam given to people applying for U.S. citizenship". Add to that the fact that our education system has gotten far worse since then and an informed electorate is a myth.

Referring you back to the original proposition when i started this thread, if you are ahead of your total portfolio balance that you had at the end of Jan. you are the winner.

In spite of our differences here and there are many, I think overall us vp players are quite an intelligent bunch. Wish I could say that about the rest of America. Our local radio station used to stop people on the street and ask them very basic questions on a variety of subjects. Most of them got the answers incorrect. I will think back and see if I can remember some if the questions. Darn typos. This old SE phone has such a small keypad.
I just remembered one of the questions. The local radio station Host would station himself inside a 7-Eleven and as customers came in for their coffee or a drink he would ask the question. The question I remember is........if something happens to the President of the United States, who is next in line to take over the duties? Three out of five people got the answer wrong. One of the answers was..... I’m not sure, it must be one of the Generals.
I just remembered one more question. The host asked someone who came in to the store........ could you tell me how many quarters there are in a dollar? The person’s answer was I don’t know I never was any good in math. I rest my case.

Gut check time OLD's. Let's see some intelligence on display.
"The question is": Is our American form of Government a Democracy?
