I was curious, and read the Salt River article. I hope the rest of it was more accurate than the statement that sodium is the elemental form of salt. Salt is a compound (table salt is sodium chloride), not an element.

Na for Sodium and NaCl for Sodium chloride or table salt. Like OMT said. People use the names interchangeably, but of course they are not the same. I did enjoy the article very much. Thanks again OTA.

Having been a chem major early in my college days, I should have caught that.

The overall story was so interesting, I just overlooked it. I was a Marine Biology major for the first few years too, so I had all the usual Chem, Bio, and Physics courses.
