Re: Three to a Royal, Hold or Don't Hold?
I broke my discipline once and won $100,000 on $25 DDB with a 3-card hold for a Royal. My thinking when presented the 3-to-a-Royal is that I will likely lose but give it a shot this one time, never again.
Having won the $100K (pre-tax) I was ruined forever for Royal discipline!!
I also broke a natural FH that same day, held 3 aces, and won $20K (pre-tax).
Several other nice $25 DDB hands also that same day but, alas, that once-in-a-lifetime session proved to be aptly named...... :(

In DDB where a flush pays 6-for-1, there are situations where you should hold a three-card royal flush over a high pair. For example, if you are dealt a suited JQK along with another Q and a 5, the correct play is to hold JQK instead of the pair of Queens. Another similar case applies when holding a suited TJQ.felix wrote: ↑Sat Apr 19, 2025 8:37 amI broke my discipline once and won $100,000 on $25 DDB with a 3-card hold for a Royal. Additionally, breaking a full house containing three Aces is the optimal strategy in all versions of DDB.
Therefore, it’s very likely that you didn’t make any mistakes. What you interpreted as "breaking your discipline" might simply be a lack of familiarity with the correct strategy.

On several occasions I have done the opposite and gone with recommended VP training hold only to see next 2 cards dealt would have given me a royal or multiple royals in spin poker. It cost me several hand pays.

See previous post by rsactuary...just go with the correct hold and know you did the right thing. Or chase the royal and you can lose more over time.
