Video Poker by the Letters

Post by New2vp »

There have been so many video poker variants introduced since I began my search to learn about video poker some 20 years ago, coincident with the beginning of this website. It made me wonder whether I could go through the alphabet and find a corresponding game for each letter. I can get a good start from games available here. I might need your help to complete the job. Let's see if and how I can get through this.

A - All American
B - Bonus Poker
C - Chase the Royal
D - Double Double Bonus
E - Extra Draw Frenzy Poker
F - Full House Plus Wheel Poker
G - Good Times Pay
H - Hot Roll Poker
I - IGT Video Poker (ok, this one seems a bit contrived ... except I may get away with it on this website)
J - Jacks or Better
K - Kings or Better, Keno Draw Poker, or King of the House Video Poker
L - Loose Deuces
M - Multi-Strike Poker
N - Nevada Bonus Poker
O - One-Eyed Jacks
P - Powerhouse Poker
Q - Quick Quads
R - Royal Aces Bonus Poker
S - Super Times Pay Poker
T - Triple Play Draw Poker
U - Ultimate X Poker
V - Video Hold 'Em
W - Wheel Poker
X - Xtra Card Video Poker (an Aristocrat game from what I've read)
Y - Y? Because we L - I - K - E video poker (in the spirit of the old Mickey Mouse closing song); sorry, I can't fill this one
Z - Zero Jacks or Better (I don't really know this one either, except that it is listed as a game at the Play Perfect website)

So, that's my list. It looks like I could use some help, at least with I, Y, possibly Z and maybe V. I have actually played all the other ones listed above from A thru W. The last part of the alphabet got a little dicey, which is a whole other game altogether.

You may see others that you would like to strengthen or offer alternatives thereto.

The "Zero" referred to the house edge. Royals paid 976 per coin instead of the usual 800.

Cool, I actually have seen that online at a place called Betfair Zero Lounge many years ago, but I didn't associate that with the name. Perhaps I might have if the name had been Zero-Edge Jacks or Better. Either way, I now feel better about including that in the list.

As I was sending the previous message, I glimpsed on your picture the words "betfair casino," so I guess this is the same place. I should emphasize that I have never actually played online, but I did put together a strategy for that game to see how the extra royal payout affected hold choices.

I like your additions. Is "Ice Cold" a game with a special paytable or simply what gamblers lament after losing sessions? If it is the former, it doesn't sound like it would be a great marketing success, at least not as much as "White Hot" Aces.

I also know that years ago there was Tens or Better with FH=6, Flush=5, Straight=4, but I don't think I have been familiar with 9s or Better. I would be interested in a complete pay schedule for such a game. I do seem to recall some Pick 'Em like games in which nines or better returned twice the bet. If that is what this refers to, I actually have heard of such a game.

I'm familiar with all the others.

I do wonder about what a chronological listing of game types would look like. Twenty years ago, there was a much more limited selection of games, as well as some that are now extinct (like Two Pairs or Better). I know that the lists both at videopoker.com and the Wizard of Oz are probably 5 or 6 times as long as they were back then.

Do casinos pay a leasing fee for video poker games? If so, is the fee determined by the number of games? If not, why wouldn't casinos just order the standard draw poker machines that includes all available games?
