Re: Off to Nevada
Onemoretry, I have had many Vegas jackpots where nothing was withheld. And I have had them where federal was withheld. I think it depends on the policy of the particular casino.
At my home casino at Biloxi, they always deduct 3% non-refundable state tax only, never federal. They will deduct federal only if specifically asked to do so by the winner.

At least mine is withholding only, but it usually vanishes at tax time because we are taxed on Gross AGI and no writeoff ability like the Fed if you itemize. It’s still optional in Ct, but get ready to write a big check if you are under withheld.

We are nonresidents (Canadian). The rules for us are different. Up until this recent event, we have never had a jackpot where there was not a 30% withholding. We then have to file a 1040NR tax return to, hopefully, get it back. At present, we have a bit over $7000 owing to us from our 2024 returns. And, of course, there will be a somewhat similar amount for us to claim when we file for 2025.

This is a bucket list experience if I ever saw one! Deliver me a RF. Any suit, I’m not picky!

Yesterday was another not so great day in the Rampart casino. My loss was $550, while my wife, who was more or less abandoned by the aces with just one set in the entire day, was down $1600. We did each hit a royal but, obviously, that was not enough to compensate for a continuous parade of poor quality deals.

Two RFs between you should have augured a banner day! Dazed and confused reader. Cancel the parade. Time to develop those Molson muscles. My maxim of quitting after a RF rings like a clarion call, Canadians!

Well, the roller coaster ride has its thrills, ups and downs. Make sure you keep your arms and legs fully inside the car and your harness is secure.
Better luck to you and your wife, OMT.
