I often ponder this question, seems like more often lately.
What is it that happens to a human, after their birth condition which is tableau rasa (blank slate), that creates the monsters capable of the inhuman, pure evil, acts that occur?
In other words how do they get that way?

Ideology and warped morality.

Ditto to all above. Some starts with a poor life upbringing where basic morality and respect is never taught, but the ideology part is a huge part of it, and unfortunately, many of the kids in this country are being poisoned continuously in our schools, especially at higher levels of education

I fully agree on the ideology connection for a lot lately. And also the basic morality.
But most of the mass murderers down thru history had something else. The twisted ability to do things for no apparent reason other than satiating some kind of lust. Almost not of this world in it's horror.
