Bizarro World 2026

Happy New Year again all……
The Mrs and I booked a room for Jan 1 months ago. We went up in the evening. Dinner first in the lounge. Nothing special, but the Mrs was delighted she did not have to cook. The highlight I guess was mini Eclairs for dessert with coffee and tea. We played most of the evening and we were both ahead early in the 100 dollar range. You know how that goes usually! You play, you pay! Neither of us could turn the corner back to even or better.
Lunch before going home the next day was excellent. Beef Bourguignon! We tried a couple of twenties on the way out, but no go. Still had a nice time. If the snow tomorrow evening just gives us a glancing blow, I may trek up Sunday evening. Have to keep an eye on the weather.

Olds, glad you had a nice time even if it wasn't a prosperous beginning to the New Year.

Thanks Bill. A solo trip is planned for later tonight assuming the weather holds. Just have an inch or two of snow to clean up today, but lots of catch up errands to run too. If I get up there, I will try and remember to visit the gaming commission office and ask them what they plan to do about the W-2G issuance. I bet our Governor or his crew have already been torturing them to keep it at 1200. A very big percentage of W-2Gs fall into that 1200-2000 category. I’m sure 99 percent of people will just report to the State what is on the W-2G. Of course Ct being one of those States that taxes Gross gambling winnings with no write off ability will lose a ton of tax revenue if the Ct casinos go with the new Federal 2,000 reporting rule. The entire system needs to be revised especially when it comes to defining wins based on what a Gambling session really is. I doubt we will see that in my lifetime though. IMO, the only fair way is to have the rules similar to stock gains and losses based on an entire tax year with the session being the entire year. Good luck getting that passed. Chances are close to zero because they know 99 percent of gamblers are long term losers. I said 99 percent, but my guess is it is much closer to 100 percent. Of course I would never expect write off ability in excess of gains like the rules for stock gains and losses.

In that context, at least, the system is more fair to non residents. We provide our total wins and total losses for the year, and assuming the loss figure exceeds the win one (almost always the case), all of hose 30% withholdings are returned to us.

That said, I mailed our 1040NR returns for 2024 in early January, 2025. My wife received her refund in early December, but, now more than a year later, I have yet to receive mine. Considering that a couple of the withholdings were in January, 2024, it's been almost two years since I have been without those funds.

Wow! I would follow up on that. It’s possible that yours got lost in the cracks.

Not defending USPS, but your delay is likely in the IRS processing time for a 1040NR, which reportedly can exceed 6 months, even more now probably because of DOGE cuts. Hope you get it soon.

Still waiting for.my 2023 1040NR refund from NJ, filed April 2024. Online site says received and processing. I got my 2024 refund within a month. Difference probably that '23 return was paper and '24 e-file. Phone appointments to discuss are all booked so writing to Division of Taxation and two NJ State representatives. PITA.
