Amount of hands played

Post by pokeherguy »

How many hands do ya'll play per hour and how did you arrive at that figure? I always figured I played around 800 per hour but to check it out I had a buddy set his stopwatch for 60 seconds and count the hands I played. The first 2 times I played 17 hands and the last time I played 15. So I averaged the 3 out and multiplied it by 60 and came out with 980 per hour. I have a feeling my 800 hands per hour are closer to being right when you take into account several other factors such as lighting a cigarette, giving a tip for a soda, moving machines and stopping for a handpay. Since I play the same game always that I have for many years theres not much I have to think about as far as strategy goes. I didn't know if a won/lost statement kept up with that kind of info or not because I have never saw one. I also didn't know it was such a big deal to get one (won/loss statement).

Sounds like a reasonable rate. The way I count hands is via points. I mark down the number of points I have before and after a session. Since each point earned takes a certain number of hands it's a simple muliplication to determine the total number of hands in a session.

For example, if it's one dollar a point and you are playing $10 a hand then you earn 10 points for each hand. If you earned 10,000 points in an hour you would have played 1000 hands.

It's a little more difficult if you switch denoms quite a bit. I estimate the % of hands played at different denoms whenever I do this.

WinPoker tutorial will provide how many hands you play per session. There is an interesting search on this site that provides former posts by members. Log in, click on top "video poker forum" and then "search" at the top and "search by key word" on the left and finally "start search" at the base. Enter the simplest wording without using two letter words. "Counting hands per hour" gets zilch. Try others as "hands played per hour" and your post shows up as the latest entry. It often takes a couple attempts to get the wording in sync to locate your answers. Odds are good that others have the same questions as you or have already had them answered in previous posts. I understand Webman deletes spam or obscene or links to on line gambling and other posts remain.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't know if I could get a more accurate from a player's card summary. I knew I played fast but last week I had a lady who said she had never seen anyone play as fast as I did. Its not a big deal because I'm pretty sure that 800 per hour is close. I was just curious and was wondering if there was a better way to than the way I did it.

Is fast always good?  It seems to me that the faster you play, the more decisions you make, the more possibility for error.  Only game I play fast in the casino is single line DDB.  Can play it in my sleep.  Sometimes do.

You could use shadowman's method of points earned to keep a count as long as you noted the length of your session. Seems like that should be entirely accurate. If you only track a minute or two, there's a good chance that you don't necessarily keep that pace up for an entire session. But then again, maybe you are looking for your "maximum speed" and not your average.

Gin is absolutely correct that speed can and usually does lead to more errors. However, in and of itself, this is not necessarily bad. The faster you play the more cashback/bounceback/freeplay that may be earned. This may or may not make up for a few more errors.

For most players I recommend playing at whatever rate that makes them comfortable. For players looking to maximize profit it's more complicated and each opportunity needs to be analyzed understanding all facets of the opportunity.

Well ginxxx about the only game I play is DDB  single line and once you got the game down pat theres not much to think about. I'm not into any of the special plays like busting up two pairs (2,2,6,6) to go for quad 2's. I play straight up by the book. I can't even tell the difference between a hot cycle and a cold cycle. I'll try the points method the next time I go though.

I'd say about 800-900 is about right.  I know I once went through $100 on sl $1 DDB in 58 seconds.  Out of $100 I got one pair and trips that was it.  So thats 24 hands in less than a minute.  But using the card is the best method,  problem is playing $1 for one hour for one hour you could easily burn through $1,000 and I usually start with $200 on one machine and then move!

my wife and i go down to casino, with a $1000.00 each for a week.we play as a team, any win over $100.00 we split.it helps to keep us going for a week, sometimes win enough to bring home, sometimes not,our speed depends on losing/winning ratio, time of day,etc..don't drink alcohol, except just before going to bed.
