I define my winnings as what I walk out with minus what I walk in with. Winnings do not include those jackpots for which you have nothing to show except a W2G. I have met more people who "won" $5000 at the casino last night yet have not a dime to their name. The whole point in taking a check, and endorsing it with "for deposit only" as soon as you get it is to make sure you put it in the bank. My friend who is a casino assistant manager will say to me all the time, "I couldn't believe it...she (he) beat the odds...won (however much)...beat the odds!... and gave it all back!"
Once you beat the odds on a given night there is no guarantee you are going to do it again that night, so why not take your winnings and go home? That check might impress your wife and maybe you'll get more from her than from that cold video poker machine....

cddenver - i remember a lady once telling me at the stardust that one of the table games supervisiors would play video poker after her shift and would hit 2 or 3 royals sometimes in one night and still go to the atm.
ed: those are some pretty lousy paytables. 7/5 for ddb? i would have to be pretty desperate for video poker to be willing to play anything under 8/5. however, i usually play triple double bonus. i only play ddb if the casino does not have tdb. i am almost 100% positive that even at san manuel the ddb is at least 8/5.
for anyone reading this: i am just curious how often you guys go to a casino (be it indian or in vegas or atlantic city or wherever) and how much you are willing to lose in one night of gambling or one weekend? whenever i go to vegas, i always find myself losing almost what i was allocating for the whole weekend in the first night and trying to play catchup the whole weekend. last time i went to vegas, i lost most of my money the first night but miraciously made it all back before i went to sleep at 8 am. held on it to for 2 days until the night/morning that i left. can anyone else relate to this?
luckily, when i won the jackpot at san manuel, it was large b/c i was down quite a bit before i hit it and still lost a little bit after. but, in the end, i still won!

Hitting the ATM as well as the 2 or 3 Royals is ok, as long as the ATM is hit BEFORE the Royals. There are different views on this, but when I have a big night I always do something tangible with a portion of the winnings - in my case, I'll make an extra house payment, vehicle payment, buy some new furniture/appliances, or something like that. That's so that later on, when I'm poor again (), I can look back and say that I did something useful with part of the winnings. I just paid off my truck last month about eight months early, having made extra payments here and there over the last few years off of winning sessions.
When I started keeping records of my play, I saw right away that most of my worst losing sessions were coming right after my best sessions. I'd bring more money into the casino, play higher denominations than I usually do, things like that. So what I began doing was bringing the same amount of $'s to every session, whether the previous session was a win, lose, or a draw. That's worked well for me. Whenever I go to Vegas for a few days, I divide my bankroll by the number of days I'll be there. That way I know that I'll be able to get some real play in each day I'm there. I'll admit that it's not much fun losing a day's stake by noon, knowing that I won't play again until the next day, when I've still got $'s available for more play and the machines are whispering to me ("you're due, you're due, play us!").

Vidopoker; who says them injuns don't scalp anymore? There are lots of machines with 9/5 and 8/5 but few and far between and require searching them out but worth the effort! I don't go often enough or spend enough when I do go to make a dent in the comp radar. Honestly, 3-6 trips annually with 2-300 daily budgeted (less RFB of course) That alone will make many laugh but I enjoy my time staring at that daggone machine chasing that elusive RF.

It's so nice to hear happy stories and share in the joy for a brief moment. That $10,000 will make life a little easier for a while.

I usually divide my money for Vegas into stacks of how many days I'll be there and paperclip each with the day of the week it's for, then put it in the safe when I get there. I only allot myself the stack for that day. If I run out I do other things, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Mt Charleston, people watching, etc. Another rule: every win over $100 gets cashed in and the $100 bill goes into my pocket, not to be spent. The rest is extra play money. Another rule: don't try to win it back, it isn't going to happen. If you're on a losing streak, you're going to just lose more. If you're on a winning streak try to keep as much as you can to take home plus have a little extra fun.
Another rule: rules are made to be broken.

I think it would be a crime to simply game all the hours that one is there. I've killed many hours just sightseeing and not because of budget stretching but because of the history and curiosity.
