Car Rental Alamo in Las Vegas
My wife scored big time on a car rental this trip. We got a middle sized car reserved (something like a Pontiac 6000 or whatever those are called). She had discounts and coupons and who knows what else she'd dug up on the net and ended up getting it for $40 for Sunday with return early Thursday morning (4 days and nights total.)
Well, because of the runway construction at McCarran, the departures from McCarran were getting more and more delayed and this caused incoming flights to be routed into a holding pattern for as much as 2.5 hours. They decided to hold our plane at the gate in Wichita until we could make a normal flight in time out to Vegas. It ended up being a 2.5 hour delay.
By the time we got to the Rental Car Terminal and went to pick up our car, no mid-sized car was available. They tried to shove us in to a Ford Primus but we balked. The guy handling things looked around and asked if we'd "settle" for an SUV. The SUV turned out to be a Ford Escape Hybrid. Good grief, $10 a day for that SUV! Hell of a truck too! It was loaded. It was also the first Hybrid I've ever driven. I thought something was wrong when I pulled up to the turnstile to exit the parking garage and the motor died! I turned the key, shifted into Park, said prayers...nothing happened. Then the attendant who made the final check before letting us out, said "Why don't you put your foot on the accelerator?" I did and about busted through the wall in front of the gate!
How was I to know it started of "electric" like a damned golf cart and then kicked in the fuel motor! <LOL> We probalby put 150 miles on it and filled it up at $2.27 a gallon and it only cost us $6.75. If I figured that right, we got over 50mpg! But that can't be right, can it? Dang car left rubber when I had to punch it coming out of Southpoint into a hole in traffic too!
